Information ZRP3 - Announcement & General Information

The idea isn’t that there isn’t any zombies, but rather shifting the window of the server’s focus around a prolonged and worsening outbreak that climaxes in the total collapse of society.

Previous ZRPs had done more of an emphasis on post-collapse, have been excessively event-centric and were difficult to keep going for a long time, whereas the momentary liminal period between real life and the apocalypse was the high point for many people who played said previous ZRPs.
For context (or guessing at this stage) consider this ZRP to be a little like Fear The Walking Dead S1 or S1/S2 of The Strain, where there's a sense of normality being encroached upon by this plague sweeping over the city and its denizens.

ZRP has become one of my favorite concepts in recent years, even post outbreak (a well ran server can last a while though just like HL2 or TRP will lull sometimes. Does require a good and active level of staff and gms helping guide a plotline though).

Just can't really get myself hyped for a short server though :(

Especially one that just.... Skips the part of the settings that gives it it's name.

Sharing link to the discord we've been using for planning, meant to do this earlier but I've been completely absorbed in Broken Arrow gaming.

I figure with something like this there's no point having some closed off secret planning team and it'd be more beneficial to open it up in general for discussion. Mostly the channels that are kept private are/will be connected to the nature and source of the outbreak itself and some story beat stuff.

Also to clear up timeline for the event, I expect this to run for 2-3 months but intend to be flexible on moving it along as necessary when/if parts of it drag on for too long.

anyone else remember fear the walking dead, how its first season had incredible moments where it wasnt pure apocalypse quite yet?

and then remember how it just timeskipped and suddenly the world ended?

thats basically what this zrp is trying to avoid. so dont get too worried about the zombies being "absent", they'll come eventually, you simply have to enjoy the fall

whenever it comes to collapse time i encourage admins to be ruthless and borderline powergaming against the players being as the server will soon end. helps sell the craziness and lethality if people are genuinely dying left and right. ideally can offset this by letting those who die play as zombies/zombified versions of their characters until the server's close. envisioning something akin to The Thing where you are presumed to die.

or better yet

I believe a zombie roleplay isn't that complicated. How to sustain it well is a few key things.

1. Keep players engaged by giving them small things to do. Dealing with power outages, maybe something script-wise that they need. Food and water, the basic Manslow hierarchy needs. It can be offset by just 'roleplaying' it but tangible scripts.

2. When engaging with the idea of a pre-apocalypse, it's always good to have threads to tug on. Leaving it entirely in the dark is a little lame. Enough threads, evidence, proof, whatever that the virus is real, or it's origins, or a group that seemingly 'knows' more, (feds, government bodies, non state actors) will make it interesting enough without having the zombies be a present threat.

3. When they do come along, the zeds, understanding that the apocalypse is more about the people rather than the zombies, and highlighting how the world's changed rapidly to adapt to it needs to be shown. A breakdown of things outside the current space people are roleplaying in, like news from other sources, things like helicopter flights hanging overhead, military planes flying over to do god knows what, and the general chaos of such a thing would be really nice.

I feel like this concept is pretty cool. Some people might say it's overdone, and yes, it is. What's easy about it being overdone is that you can observe what works and what doesn't.

Also a radical idea for a ZRP server if it stretches onto the apocalypse is a road trip style thing. A roleplay server doing an Oregon Trail might be a fun way to spice up the formula. Haven't seen servers do that, and it seems perfect for a 2-3 month cycle.

it's going to be all about dat sweet sweet gradual collapse

rumors and news reports of drug-fueled maniacs attacking people randomly, the occasional riot, trash piles up, people stop trusting the government, emergency services' wait times increase until they eventually stop showing up entirely, public transit breaks down, sections of the city become inaccessible owing to police action against "criminals"

then the supply chain starts to come apart at the seams, grocery stores' shelves empty, pharmacies stop getting stocked, hospitals fill up, water treatment starts to fail, trash pickup fails entirely, sewers start to back up, corpses stop being picked up, zombie sightings more common but still explained away as drug use or something else, authorities announce complete closures of neighborhoods on security grounds, boats start to be commandeered by authorities and are few and far between

more zombies, people aware that something is seriously wrong, with ongoing disinformation, then brownouts, temporary and then permanent loss of phone lines and internet, people try to leave in droves but just cause gridlock which is never resolved, gas stations are exhausted, natural gas lines run dry, cable and radio stations start to go offline and leave only prerecorded government messages

zombies everywhere, power goes out, water goes out, civilization has collapsed

could we do all this in a single week? sure. should we? i dont think so. gradual is the way to go 100%

I think what would make this more interesting if the 'zombie apocalypse' is a little obscured by another tragedy. Think of something like natural disasters like an earthquake, hurricane, hell it could be the deadliest/strongest [insert X natural disaster] to really set the tone.
