I am typing this on my phone so please excuse any egregious errors.

To state first, I am not a computer-literate person. I know my way around windows at an experienced level, but beyond windows I'm fairly lost; this means I don't even know what's in my own computer. That being said, let's move on.

I downloaded The Old Republic from their site a few weeks back, installed it, launched it, and immediately after it launched it gave me lovely, retina-scalding wonder:

This wasn't the first time I had gotten a video error such as this one. Several other games gave me the same error (Payday 2, Empire Total War, Arma III)... However I was able to bypass it by simply alt-tabbing OR ending the process entirely through task manager.

This time was different. I tried all of that, but ended up having to restart manually via the hard button on the tower. Everything was fine, including getting to the windows startup screen - then it goes into standby mode for about 15 seconds, and then gives me that screen once again. The process is the same every time I restart.

I am unable to start up in safe mode in the boot menu (option just isn't there) and I don't have a Win 8 disc to start up in safe mode either.

I am sure it has something to so with that software (TOR) being on the computer, and for that I am sure it's also a video problem.. But I'm at a loss of what to do. Are there any suggestions?

Thanks for reading.

What site did you download TOR from?

Can you provide an image of what it displays when you try to boot?

Can you enter the BIOS?

When you bought your computer, did it come with any recovery disks?

What happens if you do Shift+F8 whilst booting?

How old is your GPU and what model is it?

How often do you clean dust from your computer's vents/inside?

Their official site. Idk what the URL is.

View attachment 1347 -- and then of course the F2 for boot and F12 for system setup pops up. I just nabbed the picture quick.

I'm not sure what the BIOS is... I know I have it and that's about it.

I didn't buy the PC, my dad did for me over the summer. So I don't know if we do or not.

Nothing; that doesn't work with windows 8 machines.

Again, my computer illiteracy serves to work against me. I have no clue.

Often.

Does either F2 or F12 work?

It sounds a lot like your GPU was overheating, especially if you were seeing this in other games too. I don't think it is related to the game itself.

Ask your dad if it has a recovery disk.

e; If it was a prebuilt computer it should list what GPU it has on the front of the case somewhere, with a sticker.

Video card is dying.

I just replaced this entire PC. (At least my dad did). He works for IT in the city (CIO) so he gets pretty much any hardware he wants, and I'm assuming he got the video card in that fashion. I'd be surprised if it wasn't new, and surprised if it were dying for that reason.

With the information available, I'd say the video card or another component overheating/dying is the most likely situation, unless there was something else done besides merely installing a program.

If you can get to the advanced boot options menu and start in safe mode it might help?

Most systems an IT guy will work on don't use/need graphics cards- so I hope you're not running with an integrated card.

I worked in an IT department of a video store for nearly half a year, bought thirty MSi GS8400 gpus on wholesale and put one in each computer I worked on for what I paid + 10% if they already didn't have a GPU.

They don't need one, but it takes alot of pressure off, and ultimately helps them run a bit faster.

but yeah crow, get your dad to look at it if possible. If not, try and find out if you can get to your bios. at the worst you can switch your graphics to the mobo integrated and see if it works then. If it does work, definitely your GPU.

If it does turn out to be your GPU, try reinstalling your drivers then restart, set your graphics back to the GPU, and see if it works. If it doesnt then you need a new GPU.

He's where I'll go to next. I just hate bothering him about shit like this cause it's his fuckin job 9-5 y'know? Like the last thing he wants to do is come home to more computer problems and issues. Thanks for the input guys, I'll have a look around for the recovery discs and talk to him aboot it.
