In light of the new map offered I think this could make for a rather interesting setting - have it based in the backdrop of the Black Hills in the mid-1870s (or '80s if you wanted to stretch it a little further), where you have the typical lawlessness of a mining town combined with tensions between settlers and the Lakota who aren't pleased at the encroachment upon the land. If you wanted an 'antagonist' so to speak I'm sure a discontended group of Lakota natives (especially if this is in the mid-80s after the reservations have been established) would be intriguing.
