As you all know, my current PC sucks arse- I can't even keep stable in the server due to the fact it nearly explodes due to the strain of having to render props.

So, you'll be pleased to know it is time for me to get a new one- I've had the money for the past month, but I was waiting for AMD Bulldozer to come out, until I found the i5-2500K had far better value. So, I did a total 360 and decided Intel is better bang for my buck.

My PC will consist of this, thus far planned:

A pre-assembled Mobo+i5 2500K+8GB DDR3 RAM combo- £379.95; I know that this is kind of annoying at first glance (I was skeptical for having the three assembled), but as this will be my first build, and overclocking is something that even after hours of research seems daunting- so this will be a godsend. Although I could get the individual components cheaper, the stable overclock makes up for that to an extent.

A "special edition" Radeon HD 6950 graphics card with a badass cooling system; this is a pretty darn good deal- the icing on the cake being a simple BIOS hack can make this effectively a 6970- increasing results nicely.

A nice old 1TB HDD;- I could get cheaper, but this consumes less power, and it's pretty sturdy.

500W PSU; again, I could get cheaper- but this has been plugged as reliable, and the extra wattage leaves room for expansion.

It's a fucking DVD drive

Xigmatek Utgard case; I've been eyeing this one for an age- it's nice and sleek, and it comes from a good brand. It's got fan control, along with some very nice preinstalled fans, and slots for half a dozen more; along with a fair few features that make it easy for a nub like me to set it up.

Windows 7 Professional 64bit OEM- balancing price and bawsness.

______________

Alright, so here's this- I believe the components will work, but I don't have any complete expertise to be sure. Also, there's a chance I've made a horrible fucking mistake somewhere.

So please, tell me your thoughts and shit. And remember:

HAIL SANKOH

I suggest you get a more powerful PSU, as 500 W is at the lowest part of the spectrum on the market currently. If you plan to upgrade this system overtime, I suggest an 800 W so you don't have to take the chance of hoping it'll be powered right.

OEM W7 is a pretty bad call if you're ever going to upgrade or replace your motherboard. (or if something goes wrong with it)

Also not really sure if your power supply is going to be enough, especially if you plan on doing overclocking. Never ever ever skimp on a power supply. You'll regret it later.

True, the PSU is where most of my knowledge falls flat on the face. I was just re-reading my calculations, and it does seem I may need an extra 300W. Must have made a mistake earlier.

And what's the recommendation for Windows? I'm trying not to go wild in that department.

Retail Windows 7.
To add on that, specifically, home premium, don't go for starter (It's a trap for cheapskates) and dont go for ultimate either, Business has a few notable features like being able to establish remote connections with other computers, but it's generally not needed.

Righto. I don't have any other PCs in the house, so Home Premium it is.

Pirating Windows is a bad idea for a number of reason, several of which include
1. Your basically taking an illegal, possibly virus ridden and full of backdoors software, and putting it in charge of your PC
2. Windows periodically updates itself to prevent viruses specifically targeting the OS from messing with anything especially the large famous ones. Example: The april fools virus, which only really effected pirated versions of windows.
3. Pirated software tends to be glitchy, last time I tried to pirate office 2007, had to go to a system restore point from 2 months ago to fix it.

I haven't purchased an operating system in about 3 years and haven't had any problems.

Why would you pirate Office when there are very good free versions out there?

Being young and stupid in general.

Keep in mind this was years ago.

REVISION!

Alright, I did a bit of looking and changing and chatting, and I've come to a pricier but a build that actually works but is a bit more expensive than I thought.

The Mobo/Processor Combo stays

As does the card

This too

I found a cheaper HDD that seems to be more reputable.

A PSU that actually supplies the needed power

Windows 7 Home Premium- Retail

And a new case- one that's more spacious, and will mean my PC will be less likely to explode.

____

Right, this will cost £40/$60 more, but I think it'll be worth it. What do you think?

Around 950 pounds for a machine like that is pretty good, and I have the exact same power supply, so I recommend that build.

I'm gonna leave this open for the evening; if any of you see something up, I'll pay you in blowjobs to tell me.

not bad pricing, there are cheaper options than amazon but i dont see anything that would not work.

I was going to suggest newegg as well, but seeing as he'd have to find the parts all over again....

Newegg doesn't do international shipping, as far as I'm aware.

But this is important to me, I'd happily take hundreds of hours to make sure I'll get it right- searching for components is fine for me.

It's a good idea to compare prices between different websites, as you don't have to get all of your parts from the same site unless they apply a discount for multiple purchases.
