You on about this one?

I can't find any shops that sell it except Ebay, and I'm ordering fuck all from there.

not that type, no. it's the same hardware specs probably, but a different design
you don't have to get the exact model but it's one i'd recommend

To be fair a GTX970 is only 50 quid away from his budget, so it's not an entirely unreasonable suggestion. I agree with the idea of a well-rounded rig, but we can't really comment on that because he didn't share his other specs (which he should when asking advice like this). Anyways, another suggestion would be to wait for the inevitable price cuts on other nvidia cards and of course from AMD's side (I think they already did a few?) but right now the GTX970 is such a ridiculously good bang-for-buck card that it makes majority of other purchases a waste of money at this time. You get essentially the 3rd best commercial graphics card in the world for 360 dollaroos - really hard to beat that.

I totally agree about how powerful the card is, it's just that I don't think it's worth putting it in a budget build if he could find something cheaper.

For buying a card right now, I'd suggest getting a 600-700 model. For waiting until around Christmas time, I'd take Arzalis's suggestion and buy it for the simple reason of futureproofing.

For Nonny, don't be afraid of PNY when ordering, they make good hardware (when it's not refurbs and you'll know when it is because it says it is, I tend to avoid those just because I'm careful when throwing hundreds of dollars down on 'used' stuff etc.)

The 660 Ti is good, and will be for years to come. It does support dual monitor setups, like any card at the moment.

I think your choice is between waiting for that 50 quid to be budget for you and buying the 970, or getting a 660 because that's a great card. It is a big leap from the 640 in terms of power. If you're lacking in FPS in some game that you play a lot, I think you'll notice the difference instantly.

That's mainly the thing, I'm getting the card for christmas. They refused to pay for the 970, I'll probably get it when I can actually fund myself.
As for the 660, it's probably going to be the best option for me right now. Any recommended stores to buy it from?

try local stores, they might give you a discount when they see your face i love you

anyways, try local stores for real, they might have cheaper prices

You should honestly wait until after thanksgiving for cyber monday before you make the call on buying a last generation card. Deals go crazy there and the 50 quid you are missing may suddenly not matter very much with all the steep cuts in GPU pricing you might actually get something worthwhile instead of jumping to the old hotness.

My 8800gt served me great when crysis came out, do I still use it? No. My 6970's served me pretty well for Crysis 2 and everything else inbetween but when I had the chance to jump ship I totally jumped to the 7 series cards. My next purchase is going to be a pair of 970's, totally worth it right now. Xari and Arz have already said it but it needs reiterating. Save, get the good card just hold out on the upgrade for when you've got the extra cash don't rush into buying.
