My PC has been hemorrhaging internet speed

So to start this off: I have a one gigabit internet package for 70$ a month.

My router can only do something like 500.

On with the problem:

My computer has a direct connection to my router, no modem. Since a few weeks ago I've noticed that videos and such have been freezing up and taking WAY too long to buffer. I've done speed tests and on every browser I ahve installed, it shows that my computer runs at about 6 mb/s after about 15 minutes of being turned on. No other device connected to wifi has this issue. I'll check and see if it's the Ethernet cable in a moment, but I would still like to see if anyone has some explanations.

Suggestions below (Strikethrough are completed)

  • Restart Router
  • Change ethernet cable
  • Ipconfig commands
  • Call ISP
  • Check adapter
  • Scan computer for malware etc.
  • New Network Card (This was the problem)
  • New Router (Even if this wasn't the problem, I needed a new one anyway.
New Router update in speed. Will see if the speed drops again.

UPDATE:

Problem is fixed. New Network Adapter. #swag

Sounds like throttling. Call your ISP and complain.

Wish I could get internet that good for $70/mo.

It's not throttling or atleast I doubt it. Literally all other devices I have work perfectly fine. It's only this PC.

If you're just having problems with the PC then I recommend a full malware and virus scan to rule out any malicious software causing the problem.

Outside of that you can check your ethernet adapter in Devices for any throttling settings.

I also recommend restarting the router and you can try refreshing your computer's IP config using the command prompt and the following commands:

"ipconfig /release" This will release the stored IP config on the computer.

"ipconfig /renew" This command will, obviously, renew those settings. This should reset and hopefully resolve any IP conflicts that may be taking place and causing issues with the connection.

For context, I recently used this exact fix to resolve an issue with my mother's laptop refusing to allow traffic through the wireless and Ethernet direct connection.

Huh.

On another note, certain online interactions are causing my Display drivers to crash.

Ipconfig and then renew will almost always just assign the same address. Best bet is to try to change the MAC address of the router. Some of them let you do that through the control panel.

I'd honestly go with either some kind of malware, someone else using your internet (wifi-is secure, right?), or a problem with some piece of physical hardware.

Wifi is secure.

Believe me. We have the bandwidth. Even if someone else were using our connection it wouldn't matter (Though I would know this anyway thanks Netgear Genie)

Malwarebytes is scanning atm, found 1 thing in my registry. I'll check my speed when it finishes

If you're on windows look at the resource monitor and see if there's some piece of chinese malware hogging all your internet for DDOS or proxy purposes, or if you're just plain not getting the speed

start menu > search programs and files > type in resource monitor > etc

Check stuff on your end then call your ISP. It's highly possible it's something on their end if everything checks out on yours. It could be unintentional. Hardware breaks sometimes.

I may have to agree with Arzalis on this, especially since now you're having problems with random display crashes.

LGL as well. Make sure to check all your running programs and look for things that are out of place.

Odd thing is it's not random display crashes. It's only during downloads or something like that.

So far after malwarebytes removed some things, It's not slowed down /yet/.

I'll give it another 30 minutes.
Just for the record:

This is what it should be

If you pay for 1 Gb, that's actually about 1/4 of what you're supposed to get.

It's the router. Last one we had which did support up to 1 gig died out. o7

brb moving to chattanooga for that municipal internet

Ah, fair enough then.

We actually have a gigabit network here too (Bristol, TN), the price just hasn't went down yet. It's supposed to in the next few months.

You do still have to live in Tennessee, though. That's a pretty hefty negative.

Negative on that one. Chattanooga is fucking great.

I liked Nashville a lot better tbh. That said, Tri-Cities area is okay-ish. Chattanooga was fine, too.
