So I recently found a laptop that my relatives weren't using anymore. They were kind enough to give it to me to use. It works fine so far except for the fact that after about 2 and a half hours it shuts down due to it overheating. Any advice on how to prolong it's currently short lifespan would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Try a laptop cooling pad.

Plenty of places online like Amazon or Newegg. Of course, you could just head down to Bestbuy.

Best buy I think, but you could order better ones online.

Don't buy a freaking cooling pad. Bring it to a service shop so they can detach the pannel in the back and cleanup the fan and heatsink, I think dust set between them and it blocks the air from flowing.

What laptop is it?

You could save yourself time and money by doing that simple task yourself :s

Some laptops are constructed in a manner that prevents easy access to the fan.

It is retarded, but it happens.

Try cleaning it yourself first.

Alright, after checking this thread again, people seem to think that I should open it up and try to clean it myself. I will see if this is possible. Also, for those who wanted to know it is a Dell Inspiron 1420

I got a belkin cooling pad and it never overheats.
If you want to go the easy way, get a cooling pad. But yeah, cleaning it is more efficient.

I used to use a cooling pad before I actually got a computer tower.

I'm on a cooling pad right now, tried cleaning out the fan already so this was my solution. The problem with my laptop is that the fans are placed in such a retarded way that the hot air flowing out from the side just bounces back underneath into the air uptake.

tl;dr Clean out fan --- Doesn't work? ---> Cooling pad.
Cooler Master and Belkin are brands I'd recommend.
