Hi all. I know it’s been rather quiet around here of as of late. While the TRP RR falling out of interest didn't help matters, much of that has also been spurred on by us deliberating on what we’d like to do going into the next year, and until we were decided we chose not to say much. No, TnB is not shutting down, but we do have a good deal of housekeeping to work on.
Between those that have volunteered to help run projects and servers to those who play them, there is still a great wealth of creativity and passion for this niche hobby of ours even if Garry’s Mod’s playercount has dwindled, as ZRP3's success proved without question. But the age-old method of running servers through constant eventmaking was barely sustainable even during the years of TnB’s most successful enterprises, and as many of us have become adults with jobs, social lives, other hobbies and even families, the ability to make the commitments to this kind of approach to the hobby has dried up. From that, burnout occurs, content stops being provided, and there is little reason for people to want to connect and engage with what precious time they have to spare after work or between other obligations.
So, rather than trying to ship some kind of stopgap server to string along some sense of content for people (like say, the Halo RP that we were talking about shipping after a while) and falling short because the event-heavy method of roleplay content is unsustainable without incurring burnout, we will be entering a hiatus for a while, during which we will be working on a project we have in mind. We've workshopping it out over the last year in concept and have actively begun development on it, but trying to run something satisfying during its development would take away from both our ability to provide something fun and the development itself. We know what needs to be done to provide an engaging experience for people, we just need to get down to business and make it happen.
I can sympathize that there has been perhaps a sense of dread hanging in the air around whether this place would shutter, but I would remind that, though circumstances were very different, TnB has been through periods like this before. This is not a new territory for it, and for as long as there are people interested in creating in this space there will be future projects to participate in. I would encourage you all to indulge in your other hobbies in the interim and periodically watch this space from time to time until we've got something worth showing.
Until then, take care of yourselves, and we’ll see you on the other side.
