Brethern of Linus (and Bill's buddys too),

GMod and Linux is not the best of colleagues in the world - at least not to my experience. I also found that loading 17,7GB of addons and a multitude of Source games, is not helping stability.

Personally I'm running Manjaro with 6.x kernel and GMod in Proton Experimental.

I get about 7 minutes in rp_industrial17_snow and then blatant crash.

Haven't really looked into it yet, but I fear it's a dead end.

What's your experiences?

it's been a while since i ran gmod on linux but two options to try:

- run the regular linux version instead of using proton
- use an older version of proton (i'm not sure which), i remember having issues with experimental and the latest build when i ran it

gmod should be just as stable as on windows once it does run properly, so if you're crashing it means something funky is going on

Thanks for sharing.

Figured the versioning would be worth experimenting with.
Working my way through the different Protons versions as a start.

So, after having tried different Proton runtimes, I tried another aproach.

A quick search for .log in the install location, revealed first awesonium.log, which stated it ran out of memory.

Bumping to chromium 64bit release, chromium.log showed new issues with missing dependencies.

A bit of Googling lead me to https://github.com/solsticegamestudios/GModCEFCodecFix, which fixed the problem.

However - this solution is far from perfect. Aspect ratio and resolution is a bit mangled. It doesn't crash however..

damn i should have remembered that CEF patch, now that you mention it that was what ultimately fixed it for me i think

i never had any issues with resolution/aspect ratio though, that’s either a new issue (very possible) or something specific to your setup combined with gmod being a broken mess

worth looking at how it behaves under X11 and wayland separately maybe

Hehe - yeah, well - 5 min of actually troubleshooting lead me CEF

Will have to experiment with Wayland sooner or later, so this might be a good case

Thanks
