so, i got my hands on some extra cash and i'd like to buy a controller to use

but i havent used a controller for like 4 years. so what is considered the "best" out there?

Get the One controller. I don't have one myself, but everything I've heard says it is better than the 360 controller.

Dec 12 2016 update-
Can confirm xbox one controllers are great. The Elite is especially very nice.

xbox controller if you have windows. its practically plug and play; you rarely, if ever, need any software. i picked mine up for 30 quid but u could probs get it a lot cheaper if u looked around

depends on how big your hands are id say.

i have pretty small hands so i hate using an xbox controller and ps3/ps4 controllers feel a lot more natural to me though they do require a bit more effort. but even there is tutorials on youtube that are extremely simple to follow to get them all hooked up.

Xbox controllers are universally plug and play with any Windows computers. With the PS3/4 contollers you're gonna get a whole bunch of games that you're gonna need extra enthusiast designed software to even work half decently. Save yourself the hassle.

that last part is completely false if you simply install a program that makes it so it reads your ps3/ps4 controller as an xbox controller,
get it together nerd :>

Yeah, I know. Mine works fine. I still use both Xbox and PS4 to play Castle Crashers locally with friends. But some of us have shit to do and don't want to unplug every single peripheral to enable the DS4 over ride so Ubisoft games can read the proper scheme.

I'm not going to lie about my own experience using PS4 controllers with a PC. It's a hassle compared to the Xbox controllers because Xbox is a first party product of Microsoft along with the Windows OS. There's more support for it, plus the option to go wireless. Arguing that ergonomically the PS series of controllers is sometimes better because it's easier to use with your velvety paws is not because it's designed for smaller hands, it's because that's what you're used to. My ten year old cousin uses the One controller fine, he despises the PS controller, and I'd argue his hands are smaller than yours.

Your entire shplee about it being better suited for smaller hands is at best, doubtful if not outright............

False.

(You understand that software and program are the same words, yeha?????)

i definitely worded what i said wrong, ive been a PS user for a very long time so yes it does help that im used to the PS controllers, I suppose I should've added on that big hands can be clunky around the PS controllers making it a bit less comfortable of an experience.

really if 360 controllers are that dirt cheap you should go for one of those, especially if you aren't used to any controllers due to your time away
my bad sorry

does anyone have experience with the steam controller they'd like to pitch in?

xbox controllers are made by microsoft, and drivers get installed when they're plugged in
ps3/4 controllers require apps like xpadder and shit to make them emulate an xbox controller so while its some extra effort, it really depends on how you want your controller to be laid out for your hands

when i play GTA with my 360 controller i hold mine in some sort of claw-like manner because of the use of the bumpers for things like braking and shooting in vehicles, etc.

e; i have also heard that xbox one controllers are much more comfortable and better to use, and briefly testing one are willing to agree

Fuck you. Don't apologize.

Steam controllers are the worst of the three. They completly fucked it up.

I've been using it with Dark Souls for a while, I like it, takes some getting used to though.

i prefer the ds4 to the xbox one controller - though granted sometimes it can be a bit finicky (but that's usually only during first time setup and sometimes if you haven't used it in a while)

Is that why you can never win GTAO land races??????????

Don't get a PS4 controller. For me at least, it constantly disconnects and doesn't work at all in Steam.

You can't really go wrong with a 360 controller.

idk if any of you have even tried the steam controller, but it's going to be the best controller to use. It can play pretty much anything, maybe not as well as a mouse and keyboard, but certainly better than console controllers.

Idk why Keefe said they fucked it up, it works wonderfully.

I would read up on the steam controller. Like I said, it's not a replacement for mouse and keyboard, but it's the next best thing if you don't want to be sitting in front of the desk. Its got haptic feedback on nearly every button. It uses trackpads which is a decent replacement for a mouse. Many aspects of the controller can be customized, and each game has its own configuration profiles created by the community. It's being frequently updated by Valve, always improving. It has a gyroscope built in which furthers precision and is ideal for driving based games.
It works well.
