"I did what I did for the good of the community."

"The community. Do you know what the community is? It's the thousand bans of Dave Brown's enemies - a story we agree to tell each other over and over, until we forget that it's a lie."

"But what do we have left, once we abandon the lie? Drama. A gaping pit waiting to swallow us all."

"Drama isn't a pit. Drama is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some, given a chance to climb, they refuse. They cling to the community, or their scripts, or roleplay. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is."

"I looked for you on the Canals," Bennet said to them.
"We were not there," Scouser answered.
"Woe to Xari if we had been," said Dougal.
"When the Outlands fell, Dave Brown slew your king with a golden banhammer, and I wondered where you were."
"Far away," Scouser said, "or Pirate would yet lead Civil Admnistration, and our false brother would burn in seven hells."
"I came down on Server One to lift the siege," Ned told them, "and the Lords Kiruclanz and Raspberry dipped their banners, and all their friends bent the knee to pledge us fealty. I was certain you would be among them."
“Our knees do not bend easily,” said Dougal
“Fuxx is fled to TF2, with Captain and Kieck. I thought you might have left with him.”
“Fuxx is a good man and true,” said Dougal.
“But not of the malicious non-roleplaying idiots,” Scouser pointed out. “The malicious non-roleplaying idiots do not flee.”
“Then or now,” said Dougal. He donned his vest.
“We swore a vow,” explained Scouser.
Bennets wraiths moved up beside him, with shadow banhammers in hand. They were seven against three.
"And now it begins," said Scouser, the Troll in the Morning. He unsheathed an MP7 Specops and held it with both hands. The gun was black as Space.
"Ah lad," Bennet said with sadness in his voice. "Leave it ye."

“Toast?” said Flower. “Is a new player a minge?”
“More or less,” Toast answered.
Ross disagreed. “More less than more. There are many sorts of new players, just as there are many sorts of characters. A lesbian ERP bait and generic Eastern European both have high caliber sniper rifles, but they are not the same. The roleplayers love to talk of innocent roleplayers forced to go outside the law to fight some wicked admin, but most new players are more like this ravening Raspberry than they are Kieck. They are evil men, driven by scripts, soured by bans, despising roleplay and caring only for themselves. New players are more deserving of our pity, though they may be just as dangerous. Almost all are common-born, simple folk who had never been more than a mile from the server where they started until the day some roleplayer came round to take them off to TnB. Poorly prepared, they march away beneath his banners, ofttimes with no better arms than basic grammar or the /me command, or a character they made themselves by lashing a generic archetype to a random ethnicity with strips of ridiculousness. Clan mates join with clan mates, TTT players with Dark RPers, men from many roleplay communities. They’ve heard the logs and stories, so they go off with eager hearts, dreaming of the roleplay they will see, of the character building and ful they will have. TnB seems a fine adventure, the greatest most of them will ever know.
“Then they get a taste of Server One.
“For some, that one taste is enough to break them. Others go on for years, until they lose count of all the awful roleplay they have seen, but even a man who has survived a hundred male_07s can break after his hundred-and-first. Men watch good characters die, others see good men banned, friends see their friends trying to hold their sanity after they’ve been gutted by a man asking for MP7 mags
“They see the roleplayer who led them there banned, and some other players shouts that they are mingebags. They take a ban, and when that’s just lifted they take another. There is never enough to do, their characters are thinner than paper, events never occurs, and half of them are shitting in their breeches from watching what passes as roleplay.
“If they want new friends or some scripts or maybe want to join the CCA, they need to start powergaming, and before long they are powergaming against new players too, from the noobs who have just started at TnB, players very like the players they used to be. They ruin their roleplay and steal their scripts, and from there it’s just a short step to PKing them too. And one day they look around and realize all their friends and favourite characters are gone, that they are roleplaying strangers beneath admins that they hardly recognize. They don’t know where they are or how to get back home and the characters theyre roleplaying with don't know their grammar, yet here they come, shouting for them to stop being a minge, to make a line of text that is coherent, to start taking TnB seriously. And the admins come down on them, faceless men clad all in scripts, and the iron of their banhammer seems to fill the world…
“And the man breaks.
“He turns and runs, or disconnects from the server, or appeals his ban, and he finds someplace to minge. All thought of roleplay is gone by then, and admins and characters and roleplay mean less to him than a swep that will let him shoot cops, or a vest that might protect him from gunfire. The new player lives from day to day, from cop to cop, more beast than man. Toast is not wrong. In times like these, the roleplay must beware of new players, and fear them…but he should pity them as well.”
When Ross was finished a profound silence fell upon their little band. Toast could hear the /me's through the walls, and farther off the faint cry of "//wtf nice s2k retard". The quiet stretched and stretched, until finally he said, “How old were you when they introduced you to TnB?”
“Why, no older than Flower,” Ross replied. “Too young for such, in truth, but my friends were all connecting, and I would not be left behind. Scouser said I could be his characters friend, though Scouser was no roleplayer, just a malicious idiot that hates roleplay. He was banned upon the Coast, and never found anybody worth roleplaying with. It was Bennet did for him, and for Spartan. Pirate died from a banhammer from Dave Brown, and his friend Clavier was banned for literally nothing except some admins didn't like him.”
“The TnB Canals server?” asked Hyle Hunt.
“So they called it, though I never saw roleplay, nor earned any scripts. It was TnB, though. That it was.”
