I have tried many times, but I am not being brought to the canals when I press "OK"

try to stay to the right of the tunnel when you approach the transition, its a bit buggy and will only work if you're in a specific spot

 

[Feerless]

I just rejoin when the portals don't work. Eventually you'll reach your rejoin quota and the portal will let you through.
