for Christmas I'm probably going to be upgrading my GPU as it's getting old. i know about putting together computers and crap but i know next to nothing about the actual components, so mind helping me out in that regard?

the one I've got right now is a GTX550 Ti which i've had for about 3 years and obviously it isn't quite cutting it anymore

with a price range of $200 to $250 USD what would you guys reccomend? the most graphics intensive thing i'll be playing will probably be Fallout 4 but I might get Battlefront also

Just going off of benchmarks, your best bet is probably the GTX 960 or the Radeon R9 290/390 (if you're into AMD)

960's cheaper but you get a bit more bang for your buck on the R9. (however, I don't touch AMD GPUs with a 30 foot pole, so...)

Wait for black friday/cyber monday and try to pick up a cheap GTX 970. I'd be willing to bet money there will be sales that will put them in your price range.

oh yeah I forgot black friday is a thing

yeah totally do that instead, considering they run about $300 right now, black friday should knock it down a peg

that thing will run everything for quite a while

I upgraded from a 500 series to a 770 about a year ago now. I have a feeling it'll last me a while.

i myself am intending on getting a 970 cause i've had it recommended to me by two different people, get a 970

I don't have $100 more to spend right now unfortunately

960 will run just fine for you then. It's a good card, but don't expect to be able to play 2016 titles on max graphics.

I'm not sure when the 1000 series is coming out, you might want to look into that. I'm certain that the Radeon series is sub par to the 900 though.

idk the radeon R9 stuff is generally OK lately, but the 290(X) and 390(X) are much more pricey in the US ive noticed. 960 is also good but like jackson already said its more of an entry-level card so it'll handle most stuff on high graphics but not the type that pushes graphics to the boundaries. it may be possible that cyber monday has a few offers on computer components if you want to try and get a 970 at a discounted price but i wouldnt hold your breath

i upgraded to a 970 from a 660ti and most of my problems stem from OS issues and the latest series of drivers that nvidia have been pushing out; its been pretty rocky and not very stable on my end

i've got the thing in my newegg checkout as we speak ready to place the order, if there's any qualms with this speak up now

i'm not really that concerned about all the graphics looking amazing, i just want them to run well. i'm content with how Fallout 4 looks on low, really, I just want to get a steady 45-60 on it and not the average of 20ish

that's the 2GB VRAM version, thats why its cheaper
