I know this thread will likely get spammed with that image of the guy giving two middle fingers and saying shut the fuck up, but it really is getting farcical at this point.

Regularly, a certain group of users will spam channels with absolute bullshit. Those that voice their frustration are mocked and ignored, not least because the shitposters are chummy with the moderators, who seemingly have no desire to moderate.

I know it's Discord, and that a certain level of asinine banter is to be expected, but this is beyond that. It puts me off and bums me out. Can we do something about it, please?

the epic meme spamming is like 90% of the reason i just have all channels but the announcement ones muted

I've already got most of the channels muted - but I have different expectations of, say, the HL:NA general channel and private faction channels. It'd be really sad if I had to just mute the whole server.

What the hell kind of impression must newcomers be getting?

This is not the attitude that moderators should be taking.

the moderators should make a list of pre-approved emotes only for us to make conversation with

i mean in all honesty man, i'm sympathetic to the request, but at the end of the day banter is what keeps the discord alive and kicking. personally, i'll happily delete emote spam (guilty). but idk how you can say newcomers are getting a bad impression when this is literally how 99% of discords behave.

serious discussion is welcome, and if you genuinely find yourself consistently interrupted by spam, we're happy to do something about it. but, we're not going to shut stuff down if there's nothing going on while its happening.

lol what

dudes just shitpost in the shitposting channel instead of making this a big thing of 'oh this doesnt matter!'

like if ppl are annoyed they're annoyed.

you literally made a channel for this entire reason. just use it you foreheads

Making channels dedicated to shitposting solves nothing.

This is the internet. How often do you think I shit in the admin channel? (Often.)

Hi, frequent shitposter here. I said it briefly:

There's a reason people shitpost, it wasn't to annoy new players, nor dismiss any current ones. The reason shitposting occurs is 9 times out of 10 because a legitimate conversation devolves into that. Whenever someone says something, it is actually addressed amidst the shitposting, then the conversation returns to whatever they were on about in the channel in the first place. We had a full 30 minute discussion about Canada and the US, that doesn't have to do with HLNA, but it still took place in there because that's where the conversation naturally evolved. You can't expect people to police themselves to a point of interrupting an ongoing, fluid conversation to just change channels on a discord for a roleplaying community.

Here's an example:

This serious conversation about being on server before/after peak hours, devolved into a random conversation, which went into shitposting. I'm glossing over a lot of messages and details, but that's the general rule of thumb.

What happens when you don't allow ANY sort of off-topic discussion? You're left with a single handful of messages between players, which still happens, but then nothing follows it. People recluse into private DMs and servers and it foregoes any community interaction you'd have otherwise. While the shitposting and random conversations people have may not contribute that much to the server in a classical sense, it builds the community you're in. This is a group of people interacting in a genuine way. When shitposting is malicious, it's bad. I've been guilty of it, and I'm sorry about when I've done it, but this is not malicious or dangerous. This is community building through shitposting and interaction. So no, I don't want to uproot my conversation to go into a separate channel every time a conversation devolves naturally.

That's where I stand, and I hope you understand. That being said:

quit being babies and swallow ur pride

if people‘re irritated about seeing unrelated content in a channel that they’ve vouched into, then you can get over it and move over to the shitposting channel that’s made for it

sure it’s not a big deal for people at the end of the day for the folks that’re annoyed about it just not to care about it, but that also goes both ways. quit using the excuse ’that nothing happens in the channel anyways‘ because once i see the picture that mird mentioned, i just scroll through it and notice that there wasn’t anything relevant made because it was just them shitposting so i just stopped expecting actual conversation to happen because of it. im sure you have your separate discord for it anyways so taking your dribble over to a channel made for it shouldn’t be so hard either

learn some empathy folks it aint that hard it’s an internet community yeah yada yada can’t cater to everyone but people have the right to be annoyed by it and express their concerns if they’re tired of it

I'd like to think I'm not being a baby because I find it funny to shitpost just like everyone else.

Hot damn. How controversial of me.

How often do you think I shit in the admin channel?
and that’s typically okay because the admin channel has greatly less people in it and the people within has a sense of animosity with another that they’ll vibe easier, but i also know that admins (those that dont usually check it all the time) have gotten annoyed when seeing 300 messages all just to see it was shitposting expecting it to be some relevant conversation to the server.

I don't know whether to be impressed or baffled at the breakdown of the science of Tnb shitposting.

i really don't think the shit posting is that bad bar it starts in the middle of a discussion or it stops people from actually starting a serious discussion, frame it in any way you like but for the majority of its lifespan the tnb discord channels have been pretty much dead outside of a worth while conversation taking place every two weeks or so if the community should be so lucky. if there's nothing happening? i mean just let them at it, there is still some engagement to be had in the form of players of the community joking with one another, if you don't want to take part in it when you click on the channel? just click away.

though i think it's hard for moderators to reign it in at the moment to actually enable people to start and maintain those serious discussions so expect some helpful moderation bot that lets moderators temp mute people from chat to be added to the disc server soon :)

when we brought moderators in it was done with the intention of preventing toxicity from spreading across the forums/discord, they're not typical discord moderators that i'm expecting to sit there and police channels to prevent the dreaded 'shitposting'

not really a fan of the idea that people are meant to feel bad because they're joking around with each other in a discord chat that has nothing else going on in it. if there was a serious conversation ongoing, very different story. if there's someone trying to start a serious conversation and also needs the shitposting to end, that's also a different story. it's not really fair on anybody to just click into a channel and get upset that people are misusing it when there's nothing going on anyways

like bennet said we're going to look into getting a discord bot that lets moderators control these situations in the more extreme cases, but like i said i'm still not making it a burden on the moderators to police channels religiously and enforce server policy at all times every single day. just let people have fun as long as they're not deliberately taking yours away

alright, just lock the thread. I'll mute the channel

im p sure mostly everyone agrees that shitposting during discussion= bad, shitposting during nothing=fine.

ill say that there's been quite a few times ive noticed shit getting absolutely spammed to all hell and it was annoying, but i also couldnt give less of a shit to argue over tnb's discord general compared to the other bullshit that happens. im glad that people have come forward abt their annoyance, as ive already heard some folks are going to be better at not being overwhelming + making sure it doesn't get out of hand. as far as im concerned, that means the thread's already done some good work. so cool.

i also feel like having a few additional mods added for the sake of keeping an eye on stuff could be helpful, but i doooont know if this is rly the thread for it.

this really isnt the issue to tear hair out over though, the fact that this was made is probably going to make people reconsider from going too far in the future.
