    We made it through launch weekend.

    The whole team is proud of how smoothly this went. From both a technical standpoint (no crazy lag, no major glitches), and a game-play perspective; it was really amazing getting on and seeing the entire population of 72 just roleplaying of their own accord.

    It's been great getting new players onto the community as well. That always comes with a bit of culture shock, but I think for the most part it's been more or less a positive experience for everyone involved.

    If you've been around for a while, make sure you try to help people adjust as best as you can: this server is heavily focused on collaborative writing, and expats from other gmod servers can sometimes be a bit focused on the metagame of acquisition and powerviolence.

    On that note, I think we need to address some issues that you as community members can help us with:

    • Stop asking to play law enforcement/military characters. We're reaching a critical mass. It's not going to be fun when you're all sitting around a campfire talking about your time at the Quantico together. When things pop off we can readdress the issue, but there's a million things you can play here. Take this time to explore new avenues of roleplay.
    • On that note: we're giving you a lot of autonomy with what you can play here. We're only requiring auths for a bare minimum of things, and telling you that you can more or less take your story wherever you want it to. Try to come up with things outside of tribal warfare. You'll be crunching skulls with baseball bats soon enough - the idea is that day-to-day life should contrast with that to make the outbreak fun and an actual change for you. If your character is already stabbing multiple people in under a 24 hour period/building explosives/mugging police then you're probably on our radar as a trouble maker and someone that will likely detract from the experience for other people. Please don't force our hand on quality standards. Unlike other TnB servers, we will act on it here. Even if you're roleplaying a bottle-smashing thug, there's more ways to express that than simply killing anyone who looks at you funny.

    Things will be ramping up over the course of this week and reaching a head next weekend, so we'll get out of these doldrums pretty soon, assuming they're not your cup of tea.

    A PK standards thread is going to be coming out soon.

    Like the Half-Life 2 uprising, we'll drop a playlist with all of the music we used once we're finished here.

    It's not a TnB launch without some technical issues.

    Looks like maxing out 78 players and adding zombie NPCs was a bit too much for ol' Bessie to handle. We're working on a few solutions. For now, bear with us. There's going to be some choppy waters while we get things under control, but we should come out better for it in more respects than one if everything goes according to plan.

    We wish we could have found this out before FRIDAY NIGHT PRIME TIME, but that's the way these things work sometimes.

    Before we can roll anything out, we'll need to make do with some effect concessions - GMs/players in lieu of NPCs and the like, but that's what you get for roleplaying on a serious server. Grin, bear it, and enjoy the writing.

    Edit: that was fast. Our Best Boy @TankNut whipped up a quick patch for the zombie NPCs. There may be more to come - this post will be updated as needed.

    The outbreak is fully underway! Some updates:

    • The zombie patch worked well - we've kept uptime to a reasonable degree now that ragdolls aren't spawning serverside and are properly merged to the NPC's body instead of t-posing on creation.
    • Our amazing devs worked out a sick zombie spawning system so admins don't need to be constantly present and spamming their toolguns. This should make the streets feel a little more dangerous, make things more unpredictable, and allow !as to be answered with more regularity. The cool thing about this system is that it's created ad-hoc - there's no preconfiguation needed, so admins can change numbers and locations on the fly depending on what's needed.Check out some system highlights below:

    • We've got some more gameplay additions inbound. Our general direction is to make a fun, but ignorable, metagame that will attract people to the server, and then keep them there with a compelling narrative while simultaneously taking a lot of workload off of the admin team so they can focus on moderating issues between players, responding to !as, and telling stories. Take from that what you will, but we're all pretty excited.

    And some more asks/notices from us:
    • We like to reward people for roleplaying. If we catch you wandering around and roleplaying, especially with a few other people, odds are we'll do what we can to make encounters/things to entertain you. This does not mean we want you using !a every time you pass by a police car to check if there's a weapon inside. If you have to ask, the answer is going to be no.
    • Stop asking if loot is spawned. It might be. It might not be. In the future, you won't have to ask - so break the habit now.
    • We think a few people have taken the "zombies were never a pop culture phenomenon in this setting" to a bit of an extreme degree. You don't need to call people out, especially new players, for using the phrase. Yeah, we lean toward other colloquialisms, but it's not a huge deal.
    • Quit being dicks to new players in general. We're going to start kicking/banning for people trying to deliberately mislead folks on server mechanics/community rules... except for saying "guns in the park". That's a classic.
    • Please limit !a asks to one line. Hitting us up with three lines on the same subject means your request will likely be lost in spam. "Admin to me" and similar, will also be ignored. Tell us what you need so we can dispatch accordingly.
