Noticed there wasn't a guide on this so...
You may need to download winrar or a similar program to extract downloads.
There are three ways you can add files to gmod, paired with three types of downloads.
1) Downloading folders
This is one of the most common ways to mod gmod, the TnB megapack uses this method.
You will have a folder like this...
And the downloaded folder should look like this.
What you need to do is select all the folders in the download, and drop them into the "garrysmod" folder inside the other garrysmod folder.
Drop the download folders into the folder which has been highlighted.
It may ask if you are sure you want to overwrite etc... Just say yes.
2) Addons
This is another common method. The only difference is that you drop the download folder, containing the folders named "maps", "models" etc, and an info.txt file. Here is what a downloaded addon looks like.
And inside it looks like this.
All you need to do is put it inside this folder
Unlike with folder downloads, where you need to put the individual "Maps", "Models", "Materials" folders into garrysmod/garrysmod, with addons, you just dump the containing folder into the addons folder. So in the case of the addon I've used, I just drag the nuclear winter folder into addons, and drop it there.
3) File downloads
This is usually for maps, which makes it very simple. All you need to do is drop the .bsp file into your garrysmod/garrysmod/maps folder. Take care to drop it in the right maps folder, and not the garrysmod/maps folder.
