I love how they're opening up about it a week before any fixes are even discussed.

"Here's a vulnerability in so many processors made in the past decade but we haven't fixed it yet."

    It's not overexaggerated.

It is not, at all, overexaggerated. The Intel chips basically just don't run security checks before they perform speculative execution because derrrrrr, and so a program being run from user mode can bypass kernel space randomization in order to potentially find specifically referenced memory addresses in higher level instruction sets. It allows fucking Javascript being run in a browser to discern sensitive information from the kernel if a correct analysis type is run. Now they have to use a KPTI system to try to fix this because this is a literal hardware flaw, as Intel is apparently run by a bunch of god damned idiots.

1/2, Heinrich. You've also got broken context switching. Here's a video to illustrate the problem:

So, as a regular user, what can we do to stay safe before the patch is released

I'm just glad my AMD investments are going up again :downs:

But yeah, this is huge. I flipped my shit two times when I read about this. Glad it's being discussed!

The patch for this is being implemented rapidly. Since it's a hardware defect, it's being applied at the OS level

There's actually 2 vulnerabilities at play here, named Spectre and Meltdown. Meltdown is the one that's most heavily fucking over Intel, but is also vulnerable to Spectre.

With that said, the fix for Meltdown is going to hamper performance for Intel CPU's, especially for use cases that involve virtualization. Between 5% to 30% performance reduction. If you own an Intel CPU that was made after 1995 (excluding Itanium and Atom) you are affected.

As far as I've understood this so far, based off early reports, gamers won't really be affected by this too much (performance wise). We still may be affected in other, less obvious ways.

Can't wait to see what happens!
