    Applications are now open.

While you shouldn't focus too heavily on your character's childhood, some general things worth remembering:
    • The rough timeline: the Resonance Cascade around 1998, the Portal Storms starting in 2004, the move to military fortified urban centers in 2006, the 7 Hour War in 2010, and then our current setting in 2022. Take into consideration the likely drastic change in technological, governmental, and cultural development once the Resonance Cascade occurred.
    • You cannot be an ex-military character without administrator authorization. All standard authorization requirements apply, with the minimum age being approximately 21.
    • Civil Protection and Overwatch would not have been present during the 7 Hour War, with the Combine invasion probably having been synthetics exclusively. Establishment of all Civil Authority branches would not have been an immediate process.
    • If your character was between the ages of 8 and 18 at the end of the war, they would have been inducted into the Graduate institutions and indoctrinated with propaganda and teachings to side with the Combine. They would graduate sometime between 18 and 25, depending on age of induction and other variables, such as obedience, merit, and devotion to the transhumanist ideal.
    • Understand that applying for Civil Protection would put a spotlight on your character and their past record, with the vetting process serving to eliminate any potential applicants with a lengthy list of violations and crimes, ergo it would be wise to avoid applying on any sort of anti-citizen or malignant. If you've been missing ration distributions, work cycles, or been outside the city for extended periods, it would be noticed. We trust the applicant and give them the benefit of the doubt to only apply understanding their character's circumstances, reporting otherwise if their character's situation would raise flags.
    • You don't need to write ten pages to get accepted, nor should you write just a few sentences. We need to see that you're a capable roleplayer and understand the setting. Your character doesn't need to be flawless nor should they be completely flawed, and you should avoid major tropes, cliches, and stereotypes.
    • This list is just a general reminder on certain elements, and simply reading it off and throwing in these facts without actually considering its purpose and effects is a way to get denied. We want to see more than simply a statement of random facts, preferably that you've given thought to your character and who they are.
    • For reference: CCA Standard Operating Procedures, and Making a barebones character.

Applications will close tentatively at midnight EST on Friday, March 10th.

Current character(s): Kai Oalani. Douglas Kuo.

Character name: Josephine Boise [Age 25]
    CID?: 14949

    Describe your character's physical appearance:

A twenty-something college aged girl, with a clear European heritage. Her skin is on the pale side and her eyes are of a duller shade of gray, with purple bags hanging below them. She has straw-brown hair that's cropped down to an overgrown buzz to hide the fact that it’s both unwashed and unhealthy. She’s around 5’7” with an mesomorphic build and less than perfect posture.

Describe your character's history and background:

Josephine was born and raised in New Orleans up until the age of 13 or 14 when the Combine made contact with Earth. It was there she and her mother lived, it was there they sheltered themselves from the Portal Storms, and it was there she was most comfortable. Despite the struggles of living in a low-income household, she felt it was where she belonged. But when she and her small family were herded like cattle by the alien intruders, it would be a harsh transition. In the process of being transported she was ,like so many others, separated from her family. It naturally had an impact, especially in her earliest years as a young teenager with close to no one to confide in.

In the Institutes, her experiences were far from ideal. Josephine was curious and skeptical of the Combine, they having be responsible for most of her unhappiness. More times than not that earned her some severe punishments. She reluctantly learned to adjust to that new environment. She became subservient to her educators and she hated it. She had no control over herself or her life. The thought of being a dependent, mindless drone was enough to make her recoil.

Her morality became so skewed by a fierce determination to keep her integrity, that she even found justification in joining the CCA. Simply because it was easier to digest that than living like a common slave.

    ESSAY QUESTIONS

    1. From 1996 to 2004, Josephine lived with her lone mother in a one-room apartment, using government aid and food stamps to get by. When the Portal Storms hit at age 8, she and her Mom did their best to survive like any other would. They jumped back and forth from refugee tent-cities to overcrowded government sanctioned protections wards all over Louisiana. Both poverty and seeing her worst nightmares materialized in front of her face took a mental toll as it would any other young kid.

Josephine was exposed to violence and greed at such a young age it was impossible not to carry some of that with her. The Portal Storms highlighted the true desperation of a parent to keep their child alive. Josephine could not hope to forget what she witnessed her mother do to put food in their bellies. But at the same time it instilled a lesson of selflessness.

    2. Even before things went crap Josephine wasn’t anything short of pitiful. She and her mother lived in squalor and neither made any attempts to correct it. She both needed help and refused it in nearly every facet. She’s too stubborn to change and far too prideful to let anyone get close enough to help her change. But she isn’t without her upside. Josephine may be too ignorant of her own dire situation because she’s often remembering that others have it worse. She may be poor, but someone else is always poorer.

    3. Living hungry in City 17 was like living hungry in New Orleans amplified a few dozen times. She was used to being poor but not used to being poor and without basic rights. She watched humanity succumb to enslavement and refused to do the same. No one would define what she did with her life or how she lived it. Josephine isn’t stupid enough to believe she can topple down the Combine’s whole regime. But she is stupid enough to think that the CCA will give her enough freedom and control over herself to be the least bit satisfied. Or at least satisfied enough to look herself in the mirror.

    4. I’ve been here for over a year. There were two units somewhere along the line that never ascended past 03. I got bored of them quickly and resigned largely because I made the characters solely to apply for the CCA. This character’s been brewing for awhile now so hopefully that makes my experiences more authentic and interesting, both for myself and others.

    SCENARIO QUESTIONS

    1. Over a period of several weeks, your character observes a citizen who has been growing increasingly paranoid of those around them. While previously the citizen responded to searches and questionings with the usual amount of frustration, the citizen now seems on edge and restless. Although they've yet to become violent, they seem like a bad situation waiting to happen, and your character has deduced this as a possibility for the next pair of units to get involved with the citizen.

Josephine isn’t about to dish out random citations, even if it’ll get her in good standings with Field Command. She’s not against picking on citizens for shits & gigs, but straight up torture is a bit much for her. She’ll test the waters and see how he reacts. Getting particularly rough during searches, liberal when confiscating goodies from his apartment, and just getting on his nerves are all possibilities. If she notices it’s something particularly serious she may just leave it to the next unit who recognizes it themselves.

    3. While canvassing a scene, your character finds a piece of evidence that links a citizen they know to the crime scene. The evidence isn't conclusive of the citizen's involvement, and the citizen has never shown any symptoms of anti-citizenry. Informing the other units would lead to the citizen's arrest and interrogation, perhaps a note on their record and deduction of their daily rations.

Josephine seizes the opportunity to have control over another person. There are a lot of ways to go about this but the most likely of them is blackmail. She’d revel in forcing the citizen to dish out credits, rations, or even their own sentimental trinkets. She may feel a little guilty, but it’s worth the rush of feeling superior and authoritative, when she can’t have that same authority over herself.

    4. Your character has built a rapport with some of the members of the local Civil Medical Services, and external intelligence has caught wind of this relationship. They request that you aid in an investigation in several members of CMS, stating that your involvement would be voluntary, though making it obvious that inaction would severely harm your character's career.

If this was close enough a bond to call it a rapport, then Josephine wouldn't be quick about betraying the trust of that CMS employee. (Or whatever CA faction since the CMS is dead) Despite coming with many of her own flaws, trustworthiness and the sanctity of a promise is something she takes very seriously. She's not about to throw that away just to please Intel, even if it loses her some future leniency. As mentioned above, not losing her integrity/character is a daily battle she's hell-bent on winning.

    Current character(s): Hafii Amir

    Character reminder:
Citizens are typically not native to the local region, and have experienced their current living style for approximately twelve years. Be mindful of your character's age, how it would affect their mentality, their lives prior and after the arrival of the Combine, and other factors that play greatly into their history. A character who has most of their adult memories post-war or established from a Graduate Institute would perhaps know very little about the pre-war culture, whereas someone who entered the current society as an adult would have more reason to be cautious and aware of the Combine's nature.

    Character name: Hafii Amir
    CID?: 12934
Describe your character's physical appearance: A woman with tied up black hair, tired amber eyes, and a facial expression that looks like she needs a couple hours to sleep.
Describe your character's history and background:

Born in Pristina, Kosovo, in the winter of 1994, the newest Amir lived a rather uneventful life in her beginning years. Being born in a small European country, nothing much in the world involved her or the people around her. It was a sleepy, cozy little life, which Hafii and her family were perfectly, completely fine with. Nothing really important happened-up until she turned ten years old. Even then, not much involved her.

She was ten when the portal storms started first occurring. In the sleepy little city of Pristina, people did not think they were going to be involved in these strange phenomenons that the global news network were reporting about. Nothing really happened, during this time, but the whole world tensed up and awaited what was to happen further. Little Hafii didn't have to care- the adults were doing that for her.

The Seven Hour War hit fast, and ended just as quickly. This time, it shook Hafii's world. She was sixteen-old enough to care what happened in the world. The combine took control of the whole world, and the change in regime didn't suit the young girl. Any plans of her going off to school or other places was cut short. Instead, she was shoved into the Graduate Institutions, where she was to spend her time for the rest of her teenage years.

Her release came at the age of twenty two, a longer stay than most in the Institutions. This was no matter, as she graduated and went through everything just as fine as every other person that went into the institutions. There came the time where she figured she would live the rest of her life working a dull job in one of the cities. The years passed, and she grew older. She was twenty eight when she finally applied for the CCA.

ESSAY QUESTIONS - Answer all four.

    1. As a citizen, your character has managed to endure twelve years of the Combine occupation, as well as the devastating effects of the Portal Storms and Xen invasion prior to the 7 Hour War. Who was your character before the Combine? What experiences do they bring from their past life? How has the occupation affected them?

After twelve years of occupation, the years have taken a toll on her. She's done her fair share of questioning the ideals of her new rulers-but now, she hangs her head, and accepts whatever they give her. From her past live, she brings a feeling of being out of place, a nice man placed in the boots of the bad guy, doing the oppressor's dirty work for whatever they may pay her in return. She's jaded from years of combine occupation, and I intend to make her character show this.

    2. Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?

She's nice, she's demoralized, she's a woman that only desires another square meal to keep her alive in the days to come. She thinks the CCA is the best way to achieve this-she applied not in the belief that the combine are the greater benefactors, but that they're the easiest way to keep herself alive in a world such as this. She'll follow procedure, she'll do what she's told, but she's never going to put herself under fire for someone else when it's dangerous, because at the end of the day, she believes it's all about herself.

    3. Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?
At the end of the day, she doesn't care whether or not she gets looked down upon by her fellow citizens. She's been in a world where she finds it hard enough to look out for herself, and so, she'll gladly take the Civil Protection job if it means three square meals and a warm bed at night.

    4. Have you had any prior experience with Civil Protection at TnB or elsewhere? How would you summarize that experience? How could you improve yourself?

I have had prior experiences with civil protection on other servers, and my experience was composed of a bunch of bonding with other demoralized low ranks. It was a fun experience, but I think I could improve myself by getting a little less caught up in the power of being a CP. I find my characters become a little power-hungry if they're Civil Protection, and I think that does not come from them, but just a trait of mine that bleeds through.

SCENARIO QUESTIONS - All scenarios are optional, but answers provide insight on your character and your writing. Consider both perspectives when explaining how your character would act or respond and what you should consider as the writer regarding the scenario.

Hafii is not a woman to jump to conclusions. She won't assume anything just yet, noting the unusual behavior and letting the citizen continue on with his life as normal. She ultimately believes that the best way to handle situations like this is to wait until a conclusive decision can be made about what to do about the citizen, then handle it, whether or not it's too late or not.

    2. While alone on patrol, your character stumbles upon an armed citizen holding a fellow unit at gunpoint. Your character and this unit have had previous arguments and altercations, with the two also in competition for promotion. The citizen states that their issue isn't with your character, and offers to let them leave unharmed if they leave quietly. At this distance, your character would be unable to react quickly enough without getting the other unit shot, and it doesn't appear as if any others are coming as back up.

Not caring enough about a unit she has been in altercations and arguments with before, coupled with the facts that the citizen has no issues with her and that she, at this moment and time, could not do anything, she would back off like the citizen asked. Of course, she wouldn't just leave it at this-she'd try to get in contact with someone over the radio, just to make sure he doesn't go away scot free. She doesn't jeopardize both their lives, and she adheres to her mindset of only watching out for herself.

Confronted with a piece of evidence, she hesitates to act upon it immediately, in regards to the citizen's clean record. She doesn't bound to any conclusions as of yet, but in the end, she informs another unit of how the evidence may be connected with the citizen.

    4. Your character has built a rapport with some of the members of the local Civil Medical Services, and external intelligence has caught wind of this relationship. They request that you aid in an investigation in several members of CMS, stating that your involvement would be voluntary, though making it obvious that inaction would severely harm your character's career.

My character would not hesitate to participate in the investigation of the members of the CMS, considering that she places herself above everybody else. She won't jeopardize her career-but there's always after the investigations to make more friends, right?

    5. Your character has formed a partnership with another unit, and the two of them often get assigned together for various details. Your character has caught their partner numerous times in questionable circumstances, so finally they confide in your unit saying that they've started talks with dissidents against the Combine. They claim the dissidents are non-violent, and only desire supplies to help get citizens outside the city walls, asking for your help in simply turning a blind eye.

She would keep her nose out of it, not telling anybody, nor encouraging. She doesn't want to be caught up in another friend's business, illegal or not. It's too much of a decision for Hafii to make, so she elects to stay neutral.

    6. While heading back and preparing to go off-duty, your character overhears a pair of units mentioning your unit while on the other side of a wall. The conversation seems to simply reference your character as a potential target without any other context. They're unaware of your presence, and you're in a secluded area without your partner.

She can't intervene in this one-if she did, she'd be an embarassment to herself. She'd feign ignorance about whether or not if she ever overheard the confidence, cross her fingers, and hope nothing too extreme happens.

    Current character(s): Katarina Summers

    Character name: Omar Saadi
    CID?: 50005
    Describe your character's physical appearance:
A slightly darker skinned man standing at 5'10, his face clean-shaven with a mop of curly brown hair atop his head. Two chocolate brown eyes fill out his face, with some faded bruising along his cheeks

Describe your character's history and background: Omar Saadi was born in the city of Montreal, Quebec. The son of two North African immigrants, Saadi grew up in a multi-lingual household and multilingual world. In the house of four, shared with his parents and older sister, Omar shared many of the experiences is parents did. He went to the same elementary school that his mother taught in, he often times spent the weekends riding around in his father's patrol car as he policed the local neighborhoods. It was a simple, quiet life in the city. His family was never worried about going hungry or being evicted, he himself never really got into trouble. All the boy did was act as a boy should act; playing with the other children in the neighborhood, going to school, making a general mess of things around his home.

When the militarization began, his family was removed from their house and placed into a zone deeper within the city. His daily life, instead of being made up by going to school and playing, now became a day-to-day period of hiding in his home. His father, like many other Police Officers, was conscripted to act as guards and patrolmen for the new designated 'safe-zones'. Night after night he would go to sleep without knowing where his father was, or if he had succumbed to the riots which were quickly becoming common place. Still, his mother pressured him to make the most out of things. He read what books he could gather in their small new apartment, during the winter he would play in the snow with his older sister and other children who were living through the oncoming hell. He tried to block it out, the changing world around him, and remain tucked tight into his cocoon.

Once the War came, and settled, the young North African was sent off to a Graduate school to be properly 'institutionalized' into the Universal Union. His parents sent both him and his sister, who was two years his senior, away in hopes of giving them a leg-up after humanity's defeat. Little did they know that they would never see their parents again. Omar was separated from his kin quickly, sent off to a coastal Academy with brutal headmasters. Any motion of dissent, any step out of line, any twitch from formation, resulted in punishment more severe then any of the children could imagine. Soon, the boy's body was covered in welts and bruises that he would carry to this very day, meekly falling in line as he begged for the day where he would see his family once more.

Once this was settled, however, the young man was sent off to City 13, separated from the family he had grown to know as a child permanently. The man worked his shifts and did what his Benefactors asked of him, never stirring up trouble due to the reminders he had gained while being part of the Graduate program. But always doing what he could to aid on the side, the faint memory of his father's altruism guiding him. Often times the man worked as a courier, delivering packages across the city on foot to citizens for a few more rations. Though soon the man would be have 'been chosen' to be sent to the infamous City 17. After a year of living there, the constant issue of crime and violence becoming more and more present, Saadi felt as though something needed to be done. So, the young man applied to join Civil Protection, in the hopes of aiding the Universal Union's statures to keep order and stability present in the mega-city.

    ---

After the mishap that occurred during his tenure with the CCA of City 17, Saadi was 'selected' to be sent to a training program.

In truth, the program was a last-ditch attempt to try and salvage CPs who were deemed under-trained or ill-suited for the job. The moment he reached the facility, 50005 was immediately stripped of grade and reduced back down to the recruit level. From there, it was six months of nearly endless drilling. Weapons training, tactical training, obedience training, having the CCA regulations hammered into his being both physically and mentally.

Six months trapped away from any population center, being educated from the ground up to be the unit he had failed to become the first time. The only other humans he spent time interacting with were either the other members of the program, or the trainers. Many of whom acted with the similar vitriol and ferocity as did the Professors of the Graduate Program. Though this time, there was no room for error. The slightest infraction meant being barred from meals, sleeping without a mattress, being beaten by the instructors, or some other punishment.

At the termination of the program, Saadi was to be shipped back to City 17 to rejoin the city's Civil Authority. He was beaten, bruised, fatigued and terrified, having lost much of his gusto that he once had when he first joined Civil protection. But the message that was sent to him at the end of it all was very, very clear.

'One misstep will lead to very foreseen consequences.'

Before the Combine came, Omar was just a child. A student, someone who played and studied the day away. He still has a few drifting memories of the live he left behind. He was rushed into the Graduate program as quickly as possible, their mother hoping that her children could succeed in the new world that the lived in after the short conquest that overtook earth.

As time continued to grind harsher and harsher against the man's state of mind, his general disposition changed. His experiences have morphed him into someone, who outwardly acts with decisiveness and calm, that is petrified by the fear of repercussions with every choice he makes. Every action Saadi takes is calculated, with the intention of bringing no more consequence upon himself than he already has.

    2. Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?

While he acts with significantly less bravado and certainty than he once did, Saadi is still who he is. He initially became a CP to stem crime and violence, and that is still his guiding intent in his actions. A city cannot operate while it burns to the ground and it's workforce are mugged in the streets.

The man is no longer social, and no longer jovial. He speaks when spoken to, and does as he is told. He can easily just... blend into the background now, falling in with the rest of the faceless mass that makes up the CCA. When alone, he does not act as a malign presence. Violence is a last resort, and is far more likely to ignite his baton as a way to give him leverage in a conversation than to strike with it.

    3. Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?

Through it all, the man still does hold a degree of moral fiber. One reinforced by his experiences both before and after his enlistment. The memories of his civilian life still drive him to do as he can, and stop what crime he can. The daily murders, the muggings, the arson, the theft. The never ending war that seemed to occur near his assigned Apartment. He still remembers why he is here, and intends to make the most of it.

    4. Have you had any prior experience with Civil Protection at TnB or elsewhere? How would you summarize that experience? How could you improve yourself?

Yes, I have been a member of the CCA prior to this application (If that wasn't painfully obvious ._.). Along with that, I have a long string of experience RPing as Police in both a Military and Civilian environment, both in Gmod serious RPs and other RP formats. I still feel that TnB has the best iteration of Civil Protection, CPs here act like actual humans instead of non-stop 'APPLY' spammers. My main focus on improvement, this time, will be my activity. I would prefer to not fall inactive again, and be removed from this group once more.

SCENARIO QUESTIONS - All scenarios are optional, but answers provide insight on your character and your writing. Consider both perspectives when explaining how your character would act or respond and what you should consider as the writer regarding the scenario.

500 would not become involved until ordered to or informed of the citizen's intent to cause discontent or violence. A bad mood is not uncommon in City 17, many citizens grow discontent with the actions of the Authority during their residence. Odds are, over time, the citizen will calm down and return to their previous demeanor. If they did not, then it would be likely that they would be corrected by a member of the CCA soon enough.

Saadi would not attempt to interfere, not wanting to put the life of the other unit at risk. Even though he holds a poor rapport with the other unit, having them die on his hands would likely fall back onto him than anything else. Saadi would hold his ground, doing what he could to get the citizen to leave the area, before accepting the demand in hopes of keeping the unit alive. However he would not attempt to gun the citizen down, or act in a threatening manner towards him. That would likely lead to the death of the hostage.

He would offer the evidence up without hesitation, not wanting to interfere with a crime scene investigation. However, 500 would offer his opinion on the citizen and his knowledge of that citizen's current status and temperament, not feeling that the suspect would be capable of such a sudden shift in action at the risk of their status.

    4. Your character has built a rapport with some of the members of the local Civil Medical Services, and external intelligence has caught wind of this relationship. They request that you aid in an investigation in several members of CMS, stating that your involvement would be voluntary, though making it obvious that inaction would severely harm your character's career.

Saadi would do as ordered, investigating the suspected members without any hesitation. However he would attempt to be as non-intrusive as possible, viewing his reputation with the members of this department as somewhat important. Though, his orders would come first, and he would arrest any members found conspiring of wrong-doing.

Saadi, due to the relationship, would likely not become involved nor report the unit whom he was partnered with. If said unit was caught out to pasture, he would feign ignorance and claim that he was unawares of the activity, leaving said unit to rot. However he would not be the one to report the suspect.

Current character(s): Dante Neri, Aldrick Kaiser

    Character reminder:

Citizens are typically not native to the local region, and have experienced their current living style for approximately eleven years.

    Character name: Andras Varga

    CID?: 56797

    Describe your character's physical appearance:

The typical eastern European face. Black buzz cut, and a face devoid of any hair. His eyes are of a dark brown-hue with bushy slugs for eyebrows sitting just above them. His stature is almost perfectly average, only being around 5'10”. He is just above malnourishment.

Describe your character's history and background:

Andras was born in the year of 2001 and grew up in Budapest, Hungary. His normal start to a childhood was cut horribly short at the start of the portal storms. His family barely survived the years to come, remaining in public shelters and heavily fortified urban centers until soon after the seven hour war. Thanks to his caring family, they prioritized his safety and mentality, keeping him sheltered for the years to come.

From there, Andras was taken from what remained of his family and transferred to the Graduate institute. His young mind, still unconscious of the realities of the Universal Union was easily molded. Andras was often introduced to members of the Civil Authority as time went on, and had always seen them as a role model. This notion being further instilled upon him by the institute’s teachings. He idolized loyalty to the Universal Union, leaving the skepticism and fear of his parents and conscious citizens alike at the door. He was enlightened to the ideals of posthumanism, and discipline of the Combine regime. He was easily influenced and succumbed to the endless stream of propaganda. This lead him to see the institute as a primary home, and a welcoming environment. It was the foundation of his loyalty, and where he strived to shine amongst his peers in proving his devout commitment to the benefactors. Any former teachings he brought into the institute was filtered out and mostly discarded by the time he graduated. Ripe for the picking and easily mended; Andras was a prime candidate for just another submissive subject of the Universal Union, not knowing what else there is to life.

ESSAY QUESTIONS - Answer all four.

    1. As a citizen, your character has managed to endure eleven years of the Combine occupation, as well as the devastating effects of the Portal Storms and Xen invasion prior to the 7 Hour War. Who was your character before the Combine? What experiences do they bring from their past life? How has the occupation affected them?

Andras was not much before the occupation. He grew up as sheltered as his parents could make it. Most of his early days before the Union’s intervention into the institute was spent within heavily fortified territory. A lot of what Andras was taught as a child did not stick with him in the process of being essentially brain-washed by Union propaganda within the institute. Deep down, he still may cling to very limited morals in his off-duty interactions with his fellow citizens and units alike. Any morals he may still have, he does all he can to suppress in the effort of sticking to the teachings of the Union. The events before and shortly after the seven hour war had a limited effect on Andras. He resided in a fortified shelter for most of his life and only saw the real outside world for what it was briefly after humanity surrendered to the Combine forces. He was swept up quickly out of the large city and thrown into the institute. As a citizen, due to his recent graduation, he has not had much time to really indulge in the city life.

    2. Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?

Andras sees his fellow humans/citizens as valuable assets to the Union. Despite this, he is not willing to allow the little compassion he possesses of citizenry roles to affect his service and judgement in upholding social stability. Andras conceals the little expression he possesses into strict formalities. He is not very eager to entrust his fellow citizens with any inner feelings he may have. His interactions as a unit would be to the book, highly orthodox in his actions at all times in an effort to uphold a good reputation.

    3. Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?

Andras was inspired to enlist and serve due to his time within the institute. He saw joining the civil protection as his duty, and his ultimate goal to serve the Union. His lack of pre-war knowledge, and consciousness allows him to look at the Union and the service within the CCA extremely subjectively. He sees, as most do, that serving within the CCA would be the best to assist his fellow citizens. He considers joining an obligation with the efforts he applied within the graduate program.

    4. Have you had any prior experience with Civil Protection at TnB or elsewhere? How would you summarize that experience? How could you improve yourself?

A fair bit of experience on another server. It was enjoyable to role play and I enjoyed creating role play for others while developing my unit as time went on.

SCENARIO QUESTIONS - All scenarios are optional, but answers provide insight on your character and your writing. Consider both perspectives when explaining how your character would act or respond and what you should consider as the writer regarding the scenario.

Andras would be extremely observant of this citizen. He would be quick to inform his fellow units of this man’s odd behavior and suggest to continue a close observation of the man’s actions. Andras doesn’t waste a moment before trying to prevent anything in these types of situations.

Andras would not allow subjective material to cloud his judgement. He’d hastily inform his fellow units and see how the situation continues. If the citizen in question is truly loyal to the Union, Andras would have nothing to be concerned about.

    4. Your character has built a rapport with some of the members of the local Civil Medical Services, and external intelligence has caught wind of this relationship. They request that you aid in an investigation in several members of CMS, stating that your involvement would be voluntary, though making it obvious that inaction would severely harm your character's career.

Andras would immediately end this relationship due to his overzealous commitment to upholding his career in pristine condition. He holds his career higher than any type of social relationship and would do his best to prove that in this case.

Andras would immediately report this to his superiors. The thought of allowing citizens to rebel conflicts with all Andras has been taught and his core ideals. He would wish that this might bring seizure to even more rebellious activity related to the case.

    6. While heading back and preparing to go off-duty, your character overhears a pair of units mentioning your unit while on the other side of a wall. The conversation seems to simply reference your character as a potential target without any other context. They're unaware of your presence, and you're in a secluded area without your partner.

Andras would not wish to risk himself, and report this to his superiors. He would express his worries and seek out a solution for this issue. He would give them their digits and wish for them to be watched for any other instances of unorthodoxy.

With the goal of drawing more people in and hopefully catching the interest of people that wish to join the Combine but find the current application too daunting, I've made some slight adjustments for the next application cycle that should make applying a little easier and seem like a less intimidating task. In the next week or so restrictions will also be eased up on the veteran program route, allowing easier access to people that have served in the Combine previously.

    1. As a citizen, your character has managed to endure twelve years of the Combine occupation, as well as the devastating effects of the Portal Storms and Xen invasion prior to the 7 Hour War. Who was your character before the Combine? What experiences do they bring from their past life? How has the occupation affected them?

    SteamID: STEAM_0:0:17621959

    Timezone:
West Coast America / PST (UTC -8)

Character biography: Twelve years of occupation. A majority of them spent under either the Graduation classes, or sitting in City 17, broken away from his family. Theodor is a man without a purpose. No will to guide him. He's seen what the combine can do. He's seen what the resistance can do. It's no secret on either side. Only difference to him? He's been brainwashed to follow the Union. He fears them. But his realization of fear is that if he can put himself in a position of power in the Union, then he no longer has to fear them in the first place. Be a brave unit of the civil protection. Avoid getting beaten within an inch of your life.

He's just a man stuck in the middle of the occupation, looking for a way out of the streets and out of the way of a stunstick. He just happens to meet the requirements. Lucky bastard, eh?

Current character(s): Travis Hunt is the only other character I have that isn't event (The other being an Overwatch Recruit). He's a Mid-Level Resistance Member.

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: I'm actually going to use an OOC reason here and say I'd like to RP from the other side of the coin. I've been doing Resistance RP for so long its beginning to get dull and boring. I've seen first hand how CCA RP works out and honestly it looks really nice and very layered. I'd very much like to enjoy this side of the RP community, at least to see how far I can take it. I tried once, but didn't get a squad- This time though, I know I can do something right.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: I play an Overwatch COTA Recruit, as well as recently having a character PKed after being an informant for intel. I used to play a Rct as well, but I never got into a squad.

    1. I decided to answer this question because it most closely relates to mine. Before the combine, he was just a boy. A boy trapped in a country he didn't belong to. His Cousin was a part of the Swedish Army- An engineer division. When the seven hour war came, he went out to fight, and never came back. The only memento Theodor had of him was his lighter, which he still uses and keeps in pristine condition to this day. He worked his way through the Graduate program, and while his time in that program was rather interesting, he grew an urge to resist the Union which then turned into a defeatist attitude as he learned more of the Unions 'Truths'. What he once thought was a noble cause quickly began to dawn on him that Humanity was just going to slowly die out. There was no hope. No salvation. Just living with what was left.

Now, it's Twelve years after the occupation. He's survived the portal storms and the Xen invasion by luck and good parenting. He survived the occupation by not resisting, doing exactly what he was told and giving a tired, uninterested face at all times. And now? For the first time in twelve years, he's going to stand up and do something with himself. Make a life for himself. Live like a person. He's tired of being treated as a second class citizen. He wants to live the units life. Who knows. Maybe it's better than the shit he has to put up with? Or maybe, it's just a whole new chapter of a bad play.

    CID: 71543

    SteamID: STEAM_0:0:122142156

Timezone: West Coast America / Mountain Time Zone (UTC-7)

Character biography: Lived the majority of his life without the rule of the Combine, still remembering the freedom he once had before the Seven Hour War. During the seven hour war his family hid in the basement as they waited for it to blow over. Once the war was finished, his mother decided to send him and his two brothers away to the institution. At the time he was only seventeen. Upon arrival he was seperated from his siblings and given the full graduate experience for atleast two years. Although he was only seventeen at the time, he was successfully indoctrunated to follow the Combine Regime. As for the rest of his time under Combine rule, he was a diligent worker who did normal factory work. Even though he did have a temper.

He had always wanted to be something more than just some lowly citizen, wanting respect and even though Civil Protection wasn't his favorite group of people, they had what he wanted. This became so much clearer due to recent events in a cafe and now he strives for what he desires.

Current character(s): Frank Riveria, Alexander Golovanov

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: It's a mix of an OOC and IC reason. OOC: I'm rather interested to roleplay an CCA Officer and see what kind of development it can do for a character. As for the IC, Alexander seeks to receive more higher standing in the society he lives within. He wishes to have power and be respected for it, also wanting the perks that come with the job.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: None.

    1. As a citizen, your character has managed to endure twelve years of the Combine occupation, as well as the devastating effects of the Portal Storms and Xen invasion prior to the 7 Hour War. Who was your character before the Combine? What experiences do they bring from their past life? How has the occupation affected them?

Before the Combine, Alexander was a a young teen simply trying to survive in one of the many military centers in the United States. The influx of Xenian life caused Alexander's family to relocate from there small farm, causing the young boys father to join the military. Although it was difficult for his mother to take care of three boys, she managed to get by. Once the Seven hour war had began, him along with his brothers were brought down into basement. Alexander's father was fighting but all the rest of the family did was simply hide, fearing what will happen to them. After sometime after the Seven Hour War, Word had begun to spread about the safety of the institutions. Alexander's mother decided it was best to send them to one of the many institutions, due to the fact she was struggling with three kids and the lack of saftey there was due to the fall of the military centers. The children were shipped off to the institution, only to be seperated and be educated to serve the Combine.

Twelve years living in the Combine Occupation, doing menial work and only receaving so much for it. The man simply seeks for the respect from others, along with a better life. Life that isn't just the simple day to day factory shifts, something more then just the regular looks. He craves power and he is going to strive for it.

    Timezone:
    EST (Eastern Standard Time)

    Character biography:
Ashwin was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa. Ashwin was nothing special at all, but his parents kept him afloat through college. Until he dropped out. He joined as a worker into fast food, worked through whatever glorified positions there was at a McDonalds and finally came out with stable income for himself or the occasional girlfriend that came or went. A few years later the young 23 year old Ashwin was devastated just as much as any other young man when the Portal Storms hit without warning, and plunged every government and its people into fear and rapid reaction. While Earth was calm and confident, he lived as normal. But soon, another threat hopped through the gates and tore him from his simple life. The Universal Union processed him, stuffed him into a city and he spent at about a decade there. Now 34, Ashwin has gotten very very tired and sick of being on the other end of a cow prod in the cities he lives in. Recently transferred to 17 and stepping off the train with shined shoes and a clean record, he's ready to get himself on a path to trying to make the best of the situation. A true survivor.

    Current character(s):
Mycroft (Vortigaunt), Ashwin Govender, OW.72359, and like 5 event characters/a Xenian or two.

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?:
OOCly, I want to get into the CCA business again - but without the spy games, without the convoluted and estranged feelings when I join into a group not fit for me or the setting - and more or less, I just want to have something to DO. Bringing some fun into the mix with being a bad guy is something I've never explored in the CCA (or, not properly, when I did I went over the top and terribly portrayed something not even worthy of being written) and would really like to have a chance at the life of an officer who isn't concerned with backwater politics, romanticizing the Union or paving the way of the Great Journey for them by gunning down each rebel and each criminal on the street. The CCA, truly, is the most human and fun RP I've ever had in my entire time here - and exploring it again with more tools and more knowledge under my belt would be nothing short of absolute fun, hopefully for me and for those I interact with.

ICly, Ashwin is out of methods. Crime isn't worth the risk, neither is joining up with his local Resistance cell and any other option is even more ridiculous than the first. Having no problem with being a bit tough or rude - or maybe even enjoying it occasionally, the promise of better living is the most endearing thing to touch his ears since a promotion at McD's. Never would he feel comfortable with maybe - the killing and overly-brutalizing that he might encounter, but his mind isn't too concerned with the "low" chance that a situation of the sort might arise. There's a sacrifice that has to be made in life, everyone's life - and his is losing that little bit of hope, that little bit of humanity - so he may live to see another day with more ease and more comfort than bubblegum on the flat of someone's shoe. There's a possibility even, that Ashwin becomes acclimatized to this air of brutality and struggle to the point where he grows a... pleasure, from being above people. Not everyone is pure or good at heart, Ashwin is no exception to the toxicity of the streets. Power has a way of influencing the soul. I think this development could lead to some very interesting experiences for both me and anyone tossed into my snowballing story, of any branch of life or faction.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?:
Yes! I've played (in order): DUTY.03.00846, HAMMER.03.470?? and MACE.02.30012. I've had a lot of experience and 90% of it was fun, as well as being 70% of my time on TnB. I'm getting homesick.

    Question:

    2. Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them?: How will they react to the situations they are put into?:
Ashwin is an odd type. You meet soft, sensitive people - and you meet tougher, crueler ones. He is teetering on the fence, looking both ways indecisively. I want to play the most human and (sorta) accurate to my own mentality character as possible. The CCA as a faction is a tool to help me do that, as well as being a tool to help me influence other people and the setting in the best way I can.

Anyway, back to Ashwin. I'm confident in my ability, so I'll say that I'll be able to pull off an effective and believable citizen - adapting to his new lifestyle as the limb of the law. Being the neutral and simply backwater-type miserable guy, he won't be the Combine praising type, nor the completely undercover rebel. Anyone I interact with shouldn't feel disadvantaged because of their faction, they should only ever feel beneath me if they've done something IC and deserving of punishment. Letting things slip, leaving people with certain food or what not - but then on the opposite spectrum, Ashwin might nab something or peddle someone for something of interest, or even use his power to beat someone who's been getting on his nerves. It won't be a constant overpowering dirty cop situation, nor will it be a sweet nice cop letting you keep your body un-bruised after you beat up his friend. I want to play in the flexible and large grey area. That's the gist, really. My goal is to be believable and give as much as I get.

    Character Name: Alaire Vidal
    CID: 94481
    SteamID: STEAM_0:1:33375949
    Timezone: UK
    Character biography:
There isn't too much to say about Alaire's pre-war life. He grew up in a small and comfortable home on the outskirts of London; his mother was unemployed and his father served in the army. Never a violent child or one who sought to really extend himself past his comfort zone, this was very much a theme once the Occupation began and the Union arrived in force when he was in his late teens. As he was torn from his city and bounced around from place to place this only instilled within him the simple truth that he valued his life more than anything else, and that you only got one - so stupid choices that could lead to your death only made things worse.

Resisting? Not unless you were foolhardy; why put yourself up for a painful death somewhere like that? As for the CCA - he didn't want the stigma, not at the time. Prior to enlisting, Alaire worked in a ration-packaging factory in one of the outlying districts of the city, often working double shifts and night shifts when the factory fell behind quota. While he held a respectable position as assistant foreman it was always the same, day in and day out. And while that suited, the schedule did not. As such, he began to seek out other alternatives. The CA? Not his thing. WBS? Too extreme. CWU? He didn't really have the energy nor trust to go around fixing shit day in and day out. As his other prospects fade away and the realization he could make his life that little bit better in exchange for slapping the mask on settled in, he started to realize that maybe the rational choice was to do just that.

I mean, it wasn't like he had to go around and murder people. Just act tough, frisk some people, that sort of thing, right? He's not loyal to the Union, he's under no illusions about them. But equally, the alternative is almost certain death. And, hell, they do give him housing, food and relative security.

    Current character(s):
James Daniels, Servitor 05767, OWR.05693 and a few event characters.

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?:

The CCA was the first ever faction I got into when I joined TnB. I had a wonderful time in Socio for all I was fast-tracked into Intel and I feel I really missed out on the dynamics and general low-level work that comes with Socio. The squad building, recruit phases and general character development was entirely missed out on. I have no intentions of going anywhere else but Socio and will take the story as it comes. I've got a bunch of OOC friends who have units too and I'd like to tell new stories with them as much as the players I don't know.

ICly speaking, Alaire is a far cry from what Francis was when he enlisted. Alaire has no intentions of running away or risking his life; he's not in this to kill the enemy or for the glory of the Union. He's a guy who wants better food and housing; nothing more and nothing less. He wants to avoid all the bullshit, come on shift and earn his pay before going off to chill the nights away. He's not a loyalist and has no grand designs.

He understands that this may come with being a bit harsh on people, but the guy was an assistant foreman - he had to be harsh himself sometimes to help meet the quotas so he didn't get relegated back to being on this lines himself. He doesn't enjoy it but he's prepared to rough someone up to send a message if needs be.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?:

Yep! I played 05693 (who later joined Intel and went rogue) for five months. I also have a OWR.

    PICK ONE QUESTION TO ANSWER:
    3.
Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?
Civil Protection was always a sort of 'last port of call' for Alaire. He worked as a factory foreman's assistant in a ration-packing plant that suffered heavily from slacking standards and cuts. He was forced into night shifts as much as double shifts; he spent most of his off-time in the local bars. It wasn't a good life, but resisting was a suicidal pipe dream (not that he didn't support it, he just wanted no part of it) and equally the Union were tyrants but they kept the bad shit out and gave him a home and food to live.

He began to reach out to find other avenues, albeit apprehensive at the risk. Work for loyalist status for goodies? That put a target on him. WBS was too radical. CWU was too much effort, for all he enjoyed the look into joining. Finally... the CCA. Better rations, better accommodation, anonymity in exchange for having to rough some folks up or look scary. How often did they get into bad situations? He could just skip out on those, surely?

Of course this is the common story echoed by probably tens of citizens every cycle, all across the city. He's not unique or grandiose in his motives. He's just human.

    Timezone: EST (UTC−05:00)
    Character biography:
Vagrancy has been Alexandra's life for as long as memory serves. She grew up on the streets of Bucharest, Romania, during the time of the Soviet Union's dissolution and the turmoil that ensued. Her lack of education, guidance in her early years, and the aggressive political climate of her country left much to be desired. More than anything, though, it taught her that you're not entitled to anything, not even the skin on your own back. Her formative years were spent tucked away in concrete tunnels, heating ducts leftover from the Communist era. She was surrounded by tapestries, Christian icons, and others made just as apathetic and numbed by drug use as her.

The portal storms brought some lovely change to her life. For one, she found herself being shifted about from city to city, from camp to camp, building to building. She did not survive by utilizing some hidden talent, some menagerie of survival skills, or even good decision making. It was luck and luck alone that carried her through her life as an orphan in post-Soviet Bucharest, the portal storms, and the absolute horror of the 7 Hour War. She persisted, only barely lucid enough to be thankful for her own life. Twelve years spent mindlessly slaving away in Union foundries did little to bring her out of her lifelong stupor, that is, until a fellow worker (whose name was none of her concern) confided in her that he had plans of joining Civil Protection. He, unprovoked, told her of the benefits of better food, better housing, and a sense of belonging that he felt he would gain from it. He went on about how he had been tired of being put down his whole life - how for once he wanted to be ahead, to be in a position of authority. Alexandra resonated with this, made confident in the plans this man had made, and decided to pursue it herself. After thirty four some-odd years of uncertainty, she's more than willing to take any opportunity she can for stability in her life. At the expense of others? Absolutely. At the expense of losing her humanity? We'll see.

Current character(s): "Doors", Inspector Geraldo Idna, Cassandra Darnel, Gawel, Marleen Frisch

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?:
People have been egging me onto getting involved with the CCA ever since I joined tnb, so taking into consideration how low population has been as of late I figure now's as good a time as ever to throw my lifeless body to the pyre.

Speaking in terms of why my character wants to serve, she's pretty keen on enjoying some semblance of comfort before she's inevitably killed. She doesn't have the mind to pass as a loyalist and the nuances of a resistance movement never seemed to get through her lead-thick skull. A classic method of avoiding abuse is to, yourself, become the abuser. On some subconscious level this is her intention with enlisting.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: I've had two units before this one, both dropped due to inactivity at 04 rank if I remember correctly. I've done CCA stuff on other servers as well. I've experience playing COTA and event cops for major events like HELIOS and Rowtree's Air Exchange event as well.

Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?
Alexandra is empty-headed, self-concerned, and lacking in self awareness. She's looking to reap the benefits of a position in the CCA and do what she has to do to survive, but beyond that, nothing. This is her in her current state and I fully expect her motives and behavior to change and develop overtime. It's pretty obvious the character isn't quite fleshed out yet as I intend to do that in the CCA. This is the part where they wake up, if that makes sense. I also fully acknowledge the particular role the CCA fills on the server and ultimately intend to do what makes for a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved rather than what suits my character's motives when it comes right down to it.

    Character biography:

On July Fifteenth she was born in a smaller town in South Germany, she was raised by a young happy couple for about three years, when she turned Four they began to fight for short periods of time. Once she had gotten to the age of 8 in which her parents divorced to different towns. Her parents were two different types of people, her father was the care, loving, and yet a semi-slacking parent. Her mom was a strict, uncaring, and never had time for her. She normally lived with her father whenever it wasn’t the weekend. She’d grow up as a normal girl not much else. Until the portal storms happened, her father brought her to a small refugee camp with armed guards. Once getting there fighting could be heard outside of a small bunker she was in with her father and others were, After a long few hours of fighting the sun can be heard with a large sudden nothingness would happen and then everyone stepped outside and then that was when the world was no longer free. Soon after all of the fighting, they found themselves in a prison like a bus moving to a small camp, her father was told about a graduate program. After told about how it could help her finish her schooling and help her in her later life he accepted without a second thought.
In the graduate programs, she didn’t have the best of luck with any other kids, although friendship wasn’t really wanted them so it wasn’t bad. But it slowly made her crave friendship, companionship.
Once she entered City 8 she found out just who bad life was then. She was relocated a few times before being a place one last time in City 17 for a longer while living the citizen dream of an apartment and just being alive. It wasn’t always easy at first with all the forced labor and work, but she lived. Soon she craved a better life, better food, something better than her tiny apartment in the corner with nothing to eat.

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: She wants to join because she heard about what she would get, she liked the offer and thought she'd apply to get better food, housing, and better general life to some points.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: Not on this server. I've been OTA on different servers but otherwise not really. Although I hope I can try it out on this server.

Current character(s): Kat Peterson, Chris Hanson.
Have you had any prior experience with Civil Protection at TnB or elsewhere? How would you summarize that experience? How could you improve yourself? I’ve been CCA/MPF on many servers, the highest I’ve gotten is DvL on a fairly small server. It was a fairly small run but it was very fun. But if I had to improve myself I think I’d need to learn the radio codes. But I mean who doesn’t need to when new to a new system

Accepted for interview. While normally I would deny an application like this having read over it, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and allow you the chance to impress our field command on the server. They will know best from roleplaying with you whether or not you are a suitable candidate.

Character biography: "I grew up in the 'burbs, man. It was, uh, hard...not the 'burbs, but, y'know, after th' burbs...When the guys came and took over everything...what I missed most was the reefer...and then..." It never once occurred to the chronic idiot that his 'drinking buddy' was well past the point of caring and just over the threshold of not hearing. Buzz's fingers drummed against the counter as he droned on, tippity-tap; he always got fidgety when he ran out of ciggies...which happened as often as always.

At length, Buzz hobbled out of the bar after snagging some credits from his limp compatriot's lint-lined pockets. A fifth of some non-Union hooch, at worst, mildly inebriated, so his cognizance was still very much intact. This meant Buzz had failed in his nightly goal: to forget that he had run out of cigarettes. Jittering, he passed down the streets, eying this passerby and that passerby until he espied some two-bit junkie putting up a poster for a paltry sum. Buzz came to a halt, eying the recruitment poster for some time. The picture of some well-uniformed CCA goon held his gaze for some time. He must've looked very contemplative, silently staring at the species traitor, weighing in on the pictured male's conscience...but, in reality, he wasn't even looking at the pretty images and logos (nor was he capable of higher thought). Buzz was reading—seriously reading, for the first time in his life—the text below. Something along the lines of “better pay,” which he interpreted as “more ciggies.” Buzz weighed in. He could go to work tomorrow: lift boxes, sort packages, collect loose scrap for rolling papers...or apply, and have ciggies. Fuck it, worth a shot.

Current character(s): Mikhail Katkov, Buzz Windrip

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: What with the SRP iteration being very inactive, I've decided to try out some other options. A couple of people on my friend's list have been asking me to hop onto the HL2RP server, so I decided to give it a shot. I've played on other HL2 servers before and the only thing I haven't really experienced is CCA roleplay and Vortigaunt roleplay, the latter I have no interest in. So, I decided to apply.

As for Buzz, he's finding life without quick and easy access to his addictions to be nigh intolerable. A place in the CCA would alleviate his problems of obtaining cigarettes and booze, which is like putting a band-aid on a serious laceration.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: Zilch.

    2. Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?

Buzz is, first and foremost, a selfish person, though it's not his fault: other people don't solve his problems. He's got to have a steady supply of nicotine and alcohol in his system, or he can't function too well. So far he's managed to just barely scrape by—though he may recall the horrors of the Seven-Hour War, those are in the past, while the ticks that vex him are in the present. The CCA is an opportunity to relieve some of the stress on his system. As such, he's much more keen to better his position in the CCA by whatever means necessary despite weak inner reservations. He'll go through his daily work with a me-or-them mentality, assuming that anyone would do the same to him if the roles were reversed. Of course, as he spends more time with his coworkers and his oppressed, the personal relationships he'd develop will start to call into question his motives, leading to uneasy choices.

    Accepted for interview.

Character biography: Leonide Mandeep was born in India in 1990, to two Sikh parents in the region known as ‘Punjab’. He grew up a rather normal lifestyle, one could say, he even had opportunity to go to school but nothing that he would’ve learned in school would teach him to combat the hardships of the years to come, the Seven Hour War had shown have his family killed as the Indian Military struggled to keep up a defense, his mother lost in the smoke of ash that would leave him abandoned on the streets of his small town, his parents lost or dead and his siblings crying as they huddled in the small cramped house, soon they were discovered by the ‘occupying forces’ and shortly sent to the Institutions never to be seen again.

Leonide had loyalty beaten and brainwashed into him, his family gone and himself found at the age of Fourteen in the Graduate Institutions. He struggled with the new forced ideologies but soon realized what the new regime could do, he went from being one of the most questionable ‘students’ to one of the most believing students. He soon graduated at the age of nineteen, released into the new world with nothing but the clothes on his back and a paper of scheduled mandatory work shifts. He was able to scrape up enough money to buy a can of beans every once in awhile. The work shifts doing a number on his malnourished body. The now adult Sikh Indian realized a way that he could ‘help’ his City while also providing for himself, he realized that Civil Protection may be the place for him to finally show his loyalty and earn what he deserved from another way than just hours of work shifts.

Current character(s): Joseph Aguillard, ‘967’ (I forgot his name as I don’t usually even look at him on the character list anymore.)

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: [OOC] I wish to serve in the CCA because I have past experience with it, and I honestly find it extremely enjoyable, I wish to do whatever I can to provide enjoyable roleplay on the server and I feel the CCA will only boost me in that cause.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: I was once a part of Vice and then Duty as a 04, I then became an Engineer and later a part of AIRWATCH which I became a fully certified AIRWATCH unit after the two-week trial. I never progressed further with these characters as I got inactive on the server, but I plan to come back to the CCA with this new character if I’m given the chance to.

    PICK ONE QUESTION TO ANSWER:

    4. Have you had any prior experience with Civil Protection at TnB or elsewhere? How would you summarize that experience? How could you improve yourself? - I have had prior experience with the Civil Protection here at TnB, I used to be an AIRWATCH unit and a 04 Engineer a part of Vice/Duty for a few months. My experience was one that I enjoyed a lot while my quality of roleplay was much more basic back then, it really showed me how to roleplay properly (thanks to the chance Flat pancake gave me.), I honestly think that I could improve myself by taking more initiative and learning to craft my character into something much more than an angsty old man (which my previous character was.).

    Timezone: GMT -6
    Character biography:

The year 2000 was not a fortuitous year to be born in, in fact, the same could be said for the whole decade, and the one prior to that. They were doomed to a life very different from what their ancestors had enjoyed. Guan-Yin got her name because her parents hoped it would give her luck, being named after a goddess, maybe it has helped it, but her life afterward points in any direction but. Guan-yin(or just Yin, as people would come to use in the Graduate institutions) was born in China a scant four years before the portal storms began to ravage the world. As such she had very little time to have a normal childhood, and none of those four peaceful years would be anything she remembered.

Her first real memories were of her parents packing them up and moving them into the city, even before the military demanded it. And afterward the life she knew was regulated, even as her parents tried to teach her and give her some semblance of a childhood, it was all for nothing. At the age of ten, the Seven Hour War kicked off and ended while Guan-yin hid in the tenement she and her parents shared. She was found, and like many others her age, she was torn from her parents and sent away, and while there were some idle claims that she'd see them again, she never did.

While at the Institution she went through the same rigors as everyone else. She was brainwashed subtly and not so subtly to agree with the Union's ideals. She was reminded how oppressive things were before, convinced over the years that humanity couldn't defend itself against the perils it faced before the war, that the Union was the only group capable of changing anything for the better. She grew thoroughly convinced at the merits of the Union and, thanks to the ceaseless propaganda and urgings of the teachers, lived in ignorance of the horrors of the Union's regime.

In 2019 she was released from the Institution and sent to what had once been Beijing, and was now one of many numbered cities in the world. She stayed and worked the designated factories in her precinct and slept in an assigned apartment, occasionally assisting the local Workers Union, until she was transferred. Transfers would become part of life for her, she was sent to several cities over the next few years and they all blurred into one over time. Thanks partially to the Breen water, she had gradually forgotten any information about her parents, what little there was.

In the winter of 2021, she witnessed a local group of rebels attempt to raid the ration distribution in the city she was in at the time. The attempt was disastrous, most of the food was destroyed and many on both sides of the fighting, and some civilians who were attempting to get to safety and got caught in the crossfire were killed. The immediate action not only struck a cord with Guan-yin but afterward she and the rest of her precinct suffered from near, if not total starvation as rations became scarce. The older and sicker civilians died, and people who were strong enough to survive still had to suffer from hunger more intense than any were used to, even with the Union's usual tactic of malnutrition.

This period of suffering opened Yin's eyes to the threat rebels were and how important it was to keep order in the city. Even with how brutal the CCA acted towards her fellow Civilians, she managed to rationalize that they did something wrong, or broke some rule. It helped that she knew CCA units got fed better, and after her period of starvation, she wanted to avoid ever having to go through it again. However, before she could join the CCA in her area, she was transferred to City Seventeen. This led to her only briefly following the usual routine in the city before applying to join the CCA, even though she lacked familiarity with the area, she knew if she waited too long she'd be transferred out again.

Current character(s): Alexander Harrison(currently a retired character), Afzal Al-Rashid(Scantly used Rebel), Prophet(event character)
Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: OOC, I want to start fresh with the CCA. I've grown tired of my old character so, even with my desire to come back into the CCA, it's not appealing for me to go back to them again, after two years of the same thing I figured it was time for a change, and I figured this was a good time for it.

IC, Guan-Yin, rather naively, wants to guard against the threats the Citizens face, like rebels, infestations, etc. She also has the selfish reason of not wanting to feel starved anymore, so she's using the CCA to give herself more resources to stay happy.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: I've been roleplaying in various forms of it for about five years, maybe more. More than one of them was spent here in the CCA, I've been a Squad Leader and I led ECHO.

    PICK ONE QUESTION TO ANSWER:

    4.
As stated above, I was a squad leader once, and all the ranks below it, I was in CIND for a time and led ECHO as well. I'd say it was probably both the best and worst experience I've had with roleplay, with great highs and pretty terrible lows. I feel at the end of the day the main reason I've become so inactive server-side is my utter distaste for continuing my old character story, so I've decided to start fresh. I'm always looking to improve, so I'll say I should look into engaging into more roleplay again. I used to do that, but I suppose I lost that ability at some point. I figure starting fresh should help me get it back.

Character biography: When one goes deep into the forest, off the path so many have walked, one must take great care to remember the way back. If one doesn’t, not only do they risk never finding their way back home, they risk something worse- the state of desperation. A black-iron wood stove, a rusted axe, a handful of books. These were the sights left behind during trips to the forest to hunt. The return journey felt longer, but it was always the same distance back. The scent of the pine and conifers were welcome, as were the memories they provoked.

The years wound on. Two become one. The weight of the hunting rifle saddled him still, the same weight his brother used to commit suicide. Life was always hard for the two brothers, but where one let go of their sorrows, the other picked them up. It was just him now, all alone in the forest of tall pine and conifers.

Hunting roe deer gave way to hunting bullsquid. It wasn’t a life one could maintain. Eventually, urban re-concentration efforts blared from his analog radio, all times of the day. To leave the familiar grasslands, meadows, swamps and forests behind was painful- but so was dying a slow and agonizing death. As he had done in the forests, there was no other choice but to adapt. To try and decipher a pattern in the spiraling madness of congestion, brick-work and machines. There was no recourse, no markers to which he could follow his way back to a place of familiarity. The only direction was forward, up, and over the bodies of those with less will to live.

Current character(s): Hachirou Hanako, Arda Bashur

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?:
(OOC) I haven’t given the CCA a good shot in a while and I’d like to take a peek at what kind of stories they’ve got going on over there. I enjoy the portrayal of complex, conflicted characters and I think this is a good environment for that.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: Yep, CCA, COTA and CA

Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into? Nikita has witnessed the peaks and valleys of human experience already, and he realizes it is entirely our own efforts that move us on the landscape of well-being. He’s a man who, all his life, has had very little, and consequently has had to take matters into his own hands. He is action oriented, words are only a means to an end- means to communicate and cooperate, but eventually, there is always a moment of chaotic action, violent upheaval, before the world is created anew with each decisive action. Nikita is not without his troubles, demons and faults. His whole life has been a long, dogged time. The circumstances have bred a brash, reckless, crude and distrusting man who very rarely stops in the pursuit of what benefits him alone. His family disappeared from the dream, it’s only him left in the nightmare.

    Backstory:

To the Union, nothing is sacred. For a boy whose life consisted of learning, the first fact Htet learned about the Union proved to be a disturbing one. Even before 2013, the elders knew that the kyaung’s days were numbered – nearly a decade has passed since the Buddhist monastery complex was cut off from the outside world. When the portal storms tore across the Burmese sky, the military government responded by solidifying its chokehold on the nation; as panicked tribes and clans drew their own conclusions and prophecies from the storm’s auspice, an equally terrified government plunged the nation into a civil war following crackdowns of frenzied protestors and religious fanatics. Nestled in the heart of the Shan mountains, the kyaung was sheltered from the brutal conflicts which enveloped the major Shan towns and cities, relying on hearsay from local villagers, displaced refugees and campaigning militants.

None seemed to have the faintest inkling of what was happening – even those who fought on the front line and saw the final destruction of the military and disintegration of the Burmese state were driven by tales of abominations in the woods, of entire towns fleeing from what they could only describe as demons. Many have not even seen these creatures in the flesh, but were merely caught up in the fighting that followed as many millions trickled through the boundless forests and foothills, a tidal wave of humanity which grew with each passing village it swallowed up. Most were convinced that the world would surely end, and it was this blind fear which drove the subsequent sectarian and ethnic violence.

The kyaung’s scholars scoffed at the idea. It was indeed a time of great upheaval, but the monastery was not to be evacuated and thrown into the violent outside world at the tales of one village shaman. And if one village shaman could not sway the opinions of the elder monks, no amount of them could. Resolutely, the kyaung held firm like a rock against the tide, the monks within enrolled in an effort to provide a sanctuary for those passing through. Few stayed for more than a week, and over the coming months the visitors dwindled to a few dozen from the local settlements, who provided food and outside news to the monks. As a young child, Htet was guarded most carefully from the outside world – the few times he slipped away from the monastery he was scolded and beaten. These excursions yielded little, usually – half-decayed bodies lying alongside roads, abandoned weapons and supplies, and on one occasion, the silhouette of a bullsquid prowling through the undergrowth, which gripped the imagination of the kyaung’s young monks for many months afterwards.

It was perhaps late 2007 or 2008 when the visitors ceased, and the monks were truly alone. The land once called Burma was largely abandoned to the new Xenian ecosystem which thrived there, the last human inhabitants moved to Great Yangon, a city-state straddling the coast of the ocean. Touted as one of the last bastions of humanity, unbent by either the alien creatures or the might of foreign militaries, this slum-megalopolis of thirty million offered the inhabitants of Shan a distant hope at sanctuary. Those who did not flee in the civil war now packed their bags for a better life, free from Xenian horrors. Many died, ambushed as they blindly passed through forests and foothills inhabited by deadly creatures and armed bandits. The monastery cleared some land within its wall to farm more crops. After months of famine, the older monks unanimously decided to spare their brethren – one evening they set out in procession out of the front gates of the kyaung and never returned. The oldest remaining monk was a majjhima, barely thirty years old. He, and two other adult monks, were to oversee the monastery and guard the dozens of children and teenagers.

Life persisted for another few years; a new normality, an eerie quietness. Occasionally the Xenians would break into the perimeter of the kyaung and the older boys and men would use fire-hardened sticks to scare them off or spear them. Two more monks were lost to Xenian attacks, ten to malaria, and one who renounced his monkhood before hanging himself in his room that night. When the Union arrived there were thirty monks left, the kyaung falling into disrepair even with the effort of its occupants. Few of the texts were preserved, and many of the buildings were long since boarded up and left to rot. Nevertheless, those remaining monks were too terrified to step beyond the borders of their compound. Better they died in a familiar sanctuary than being eaten up by the world outside.

Being half a decade since the last outsider visited the monastery, the monks were overjoyed at seeing another human again. When Overwatch soldiers rounded the group up, the remaining monks were elated at seeing the familiar human silhouettes, assuming they were just soldiers there to escort them to Great Yangon. Even when the kyaung was razed, when the men were separated from Htet and the other boys, or when they passed the black plateau of Yangon’s charred buildings, despair did not set in. No measure of discipline or religious fervour could have stopped the group from abandoning their monastic duty; the yearning to return to some form of civilisation, to see others and what became of the world, was too strong.

Htet took well to his indoctrination within the Graduate school; even hundreds of miles from Burma, a country Htet never stepped foot outside, the setting was familiar. Discipline, training, and submission of self came naturally to him, and he was rarely privy to the punishments doled out to the more intrusive students who were fully aware of the Union’s terrifying wrath, having seeing the Seven Hour War first hand. The Union’s teachings were extolled by another monk – this one from India near to where the school was founded – and Htet saw a familiarity in the Union that he longed for since the decline of his now-destroyed kyaung. His naivety proved to make him an excellent student, and he was groomed for introduction into the CCA to man a new post, far, far away from the kyaung he once called home.

    Current character(s):
Atljan Vladivar, Frederick Smith (41822 – former unit)

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: (OOC) I’ve always loved the discipline of CCA roleplay, and have always had at least one unit throughout my time at TnB. This itineration I have been sceptical about a lack of depth within the CCA as the community has contracted as a whole, necessitating a scale-down of the faction, but I have been impressed by the quality of the current Field Command and am much more eager to see what roleplay is like within the faction itself.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: I've had a very broad experience of the CCA, roleplaying in various squadrons for about 6-7 years, including serving in a leadership capacity as AdJ of DUTY and spearheading squad reforms there (perhaps my proudest achievement, if the most challenging time I spent in TnB) and serving in a variety of specialist roles including intelligence and engineering.

Optional question to be completed later today.

    Timezone: EST (GMT -5)
    Character biography:

Prior to the arrival of the Combine empire, Colleen was a nervous young woman that was fearful and uncertain of what life would be like on Earth in the wake of the horrific portal storms. She feared the worst for herself and her family, but beyond that, she was unsure of what she would do in her life now that the world had changed in what may have been a permanent way.

In the wake of the war, Colleen finished the rest of her education as a Graduate, and came to consider the Combine as the answer to her fears. Solidified in her belief that the Union had a plan and a place for humanity, she wholeheartedly accepted its regime and dedicated herself both to the future of humanity, and the Union. It goes without saying she supports the Union completely, and while she may not understand every decision they make on humanity's behalf, she takes solace in the belief that it is all for a greater cause that will one day become more clear to her.

This devotion to the Union as a whole has led her to become interested in the notion of serving the community and the empire as a Civil Authority officer, where she believes she will be able to make a positive effect on those she interacts with and where she believes she can do the most good.

    Current character(s): Colleen O'Halloran

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?:
(IC) I wish to serve in the Civil Authority because I believe that humanity has yet to adjust to or in many cases realize the great gifts our Benefactors have graciously bestowed upon us, such as an end to global hunger, war, and illness. We are in the process of being uplifted into a great society that I have no doubt will one day be a crucial part of something greater than ourselves. To that end, I want to do my part to try and maintain peace within my city and promote the benefits we have been given as a species. I wish to stop people from making decisions they may end up regretting and I wish to demonstrate a shining example of what mankind can be within the Union.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: Yes, but not at TnB. I've served in the Civil Authority of several servers in the past, most of which I am too ashamed of to mention. If you'd like names, feel free to PM me or ask me on steam! I've been anything from a newly ranked unit to (at one point) the Sectorial Commander.

Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?
Colleen is motivated by the fact that she personally believes that the Combine genuinely have a lot to offer humanity even if their relationship got off to a rocky start. First contact is a thrilling prospect to her and she is pleased to be a part of an empire that while foreign and strict leaves plentiful benefits for mankind such as food, water, shelter, education, and a place for all of its members. She believes that humanity at this point in time is simply uncertain or unwilling to fully open up to the idea of being a part of the Union, and wants to endear the idea to those she might come across. She realizes that people are wary and distrustful of the Union but does not take it personally, instead simply believing they don't know any better. Not yet.

    Character reminder:
Citizens are typically not native to the local region, and have experienced their current living style for approximately eleven years.

    Character name: Jiro Tengan
    CID?: 39187
Describe your character's history and background: Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1975 Jiro had an easy going childhood, a lot of friends, middle class, and just the right school. Jiro thought to himself almost every day of how cool it would to defend Tokyo from criminals and he told himself that he could do it one day. He kept fit all the time and read all the law enforcement books and watched shows such as CHiPS, Car 54, Sledge hammer, and Gorilla The Police 8th Investigation Unit. Even though some of these were mostly watched in his adulthood he still watched them. Most of these shows were American so he did not understand them well but soon caught on after taking a English class in his high school years. Jiro always wanted to become a law enforcer but could never gain the courage to apply for the job openings at the Tokyo police department whenever they arouse.
When the seven hour war hit his dreams were crushed to ever become a law enforcer that he always dreamed of becoming even though he was always scared to apply for the job. He worked for a office company, garage, and pawn shop in his years before the war. He got a degree in engineering in college but never got a job as one due to the seven hour war and wanting to now pursue the dream of law enforcement under the combines rule to get a second chance to help the city in it's current state. Seeing the citizens doing illegal things almost at every turn he knew that he had to gain the courage to apply for the CCA to clean up the streets of the citizen scum that were doing this behind the great benefactors.
Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: IC: To protect the city from citizens doing illegal acts such as selling of weapons, drugs, and other contraband items. Also to crack down on a lot of the resistance lately.
Do you have any prior experience with Combine role-play?: Not really aside from two older servers that have been shut down due to no one paying VIP and such but I was normally just a basic officer. Only one server I was a high ranking Elite.
    ESSAY QUESTIONS
    2. Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into? Jiro is a kind man but has a greedy side when it comes to money. Due to this Jiro would most likely help citizens in any way possible unless it was illegal in any way and as he is also greedy in many ways he might even turn on those citizens or units for some credits in return instead of free.

Accepted for interview. While normally I would deny an application like this having read over it, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and allow you the chance to impress our field command on the server. They will know best from roleplaying with you whether or not you are a suitable candidate.

    Character Name: Marshal Conway
    CID: #22517
    SteamID: STEAM_0:0:48174342
    Timezone: Eastern Standard Time
Character biography: Marshal Conway was born on February 11th, 1986 to a poor, dysfunctional family. An absent father and an overworked single mother meant he grew up very much raising himself and his younger brother on the mean streets of a rundown New York neighborhood. During the portal storms and the ensuing chaos, his upbringing meant he had the street smarts and know-how to get by, if only barely. When the Combine invaded, he along with everyone left alive were whisked away into a confusing, oppressive dystopia. He never new much luxury, the long hours and struggling to get by not something new to him, though the heavy surveillance state took some getting used to. For many years, he wasn't fond of the CCA, never being one to conform or bend over backwards for authority. He wasn't a rebel by any means, but did what he had to do to get by, which unfortunately sometimes meant breaking some rules.
Current character(s): No active ones other than Marshal.
Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: Joining the CCA has been something Marshal has tossed around in his head for a while now, and he finally decided to go for it. Despite not being a pillar of the community, his philosophy has developed over the years. Though he might not like the CCA for what they have done to humanity as a whole, he sees their continued dominance and whatever plans they have for the future as an inevitability at this point. He might sympathize with or even support the resistance if he didn't see it as only futile. If they decimated all organized military on Earth in 7 hours when they first arrived, how would a ragtag bunch of dickheads in the forest bring down an inter-dimensional super armada? With this in mind, and never having been one to put others before himself, he figures; Why get hit by the baton when you could be the one swinging it? He doesn't particularly enjoy hurting other people to get ahead, but someone is gonna be in that suit either way. Why not him?

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: I've had two units before, both of whom reached 03 before I lost interest. I enjoyed CCA RP both times, buy I made some mistakes with the characters and wrote myself into a corner on both accounts. I feel I've grown as a writer and RPer since then, and think I have a much better starting point here with Marshal.

    PICK ONE QUESTION TO ANSWER:

Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?:
Marshal is a guy who doesn't have an interest in relying on others for things, though has a soft spot for taking care of people he may view as 'below' him in the pecking order, such as a lower ranking unit or citizen. Perhaps a holdover from his days of looking after his little bro. However, this is only to an extent. At the end of the day, it's still himself before the world, and he's got, or at least he thinks he's got, the stones to be a unit for a more comfortable life. He still is sociable and has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor, and likes to keep the spirits up of those around him.

    Character Name: Nicholas Mann
    CID: 12360
    SteamID: STEAM_0:1:41275997
    Timezone:
    CST
    Character biography:

Oklahoma, a simple place as well as the home of Nicholas Mann. Everything seemed to be going swimmingly for our 'hero' during his early years. Yet, everyone else knew that he lived a disgusting life For Nicholas had been living in his Mothers house for years now. His Mother didn't have the backbone to kick him out, as who would want to kick their own child out?

With no skills besides his vast knowledge of useless things and his strong sense of justice, it's surprising that he even survived this long. He knew that without others, he'd surely perish. It extended further to past his mother to even his 'friends' and extended family.

It was almost as if some outer source was trying to keep him alive as a sick joke to the world. As time passed, his age and current financial situation was starting to take a toll on his social standing. It was enough to sever a good portion of his 'income' from others. When his Mother passed, he barely had enough money from the Government to live. This seemed like the end. Literally.

During this dark time in his life, the storms hit him like everyone else. He was afraid for his life, sure, but...maybe it was his golden ticket. A sign!

Nicholas is one of the few people to think of the storms as a fresh start from his horrible life choices he had made over the years. During the time before the War, he even considered getting educated for a Job!

The horrific scenes served as a wake up call for the future and knocked away these progressive ideas. He thought of this as a cosmic sign from the gods. Instead of passively leeching off of others, what was stopping him from actively doing it instead? It's essentially what they were promoting with the new 'rations'. In the early installation of the Unions ideals, Nicholas grew accustomed to it quite easily and showed no signs of resisting the harsh rule. -After all, he needed to get a placement in the Union that best suited his end goal.

It was a lot easier to smile and suck it up when there was plenty of other people to cause trouble. The Union was the ones giving him food after all. If he had to do a few flips to stay alive, that's what he'd do.

Nicholas, as useless of a man that he was, understood the basics of survival. Instead of leeching off of other little guys, he'd have to step up his game.

    Current character(s): John Saint-James

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?:
Why not. It's something to do, I guess. Sorry that I don't have more of a reason too past this. I've put an IC reason up in the Biography.
Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: Sorta.

    2. Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?

In a sense, he has no loyalty to the Union, but instead just wants extra food. So, like any sane man would do, he did what could to achieve this goal. Nicholas is a coward in every sense of the word, but still has some sort of morality deep in there. Though, most of this is to protect himself.

His plan was simple. To do just enough work to avoid being removed, but still get the benefits that came with the Uniform. Looking menacing. Getting better food. Hell, maybe even meeting some nice Cop-Buddies along the way. It'd be easy!

He is after one thing past the food benefits: Finally being bigger metaphorically to the lower populace. He may not be on the top, but he ain't on the bottom either. Anything to live another day. Just like any other leech would do.

His personality past that is mostly just filled with random fun-facts and no remorse for hurting someones feelings with comedy.

    Timezone: UTC−05:00 (Eastern Standard)

    Character biography:

Lena was born in Steyr, Austria. She had a simple life, mother, father, and two siblings. Life went well in her middle-class lifestyle, she was supported through the beg elementary school, up until the Portal Storms started. Once the storms started, her family moved from camp to camp, urban center to urban center in search of a place to finally call home. After searching and fleeing for the next four years, they finally settled at an isolated and small camp near Domazlice, located in the Czech Republic. She spent the next two years there surviving, and on the side her parents continued her very minimal education. Not but two years later, after losing most of her family, things managed to get worse once the Union came. Her camp was raided, and she was shipped off. She unfortunately did not evade the graduate program, as she was only sixteen at their arrival. At the centers she was swayed in favor of the Union, for the sole reason that it was for her own good. By no means was she loyal, Lena only did what she had to do to get through it.

After going through the rough phase of the graduate schools, she ended up in City 17. It wasn’t an easy transition, she was already broken from the years of death and losing people she loved, which made her a vulnerable target to the unforgiving streets of the city. Lena spent the first few years cowering down, being beaten, and shoved around to no end. Until recently, she had decided she could improve herself and her way of life, after spending months weighing her options, she looked towards the CCA - why? Simply because she realized there are more positive than negative factors - that is, those known to her at the time.

Current character(s): Joey Bruno, Valentina Alvarez, Lucia Morreti, Desmond Reyes

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?:

For OOC reasons, I’ve really explored all other avenues of RP, and played characters in most factions the server has to offer. Having said that, I’ve started to get burnt out on playing these factions continuously, and I would like to experience something new for once. I also feel that the CCA has plenty of character development to be had and that’s just what I need. A fresh experience to character building and roleplay.

From an IC point of view, as stated above, Lena wants to serve for her own good. She doesn’t see the negatives outweighing the positives within the CCA, so she is seeking it for her own protection and personal gain. It's seen as the easy way out for her at the time, if not the only way out after the years of oppression she experienced. Lena would soon realize the side of the CCA which is kept from the public eye isn't as appeasing as she once thought.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: I’ve played a few event COTA on TnB, and I’ve played units on other servers.

Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?

Lena is relatable to the average citizen. She to has survived through years of abuse and harassment from Civil Protection officers herself. That being said, she won't be quick or eager to get involved in pointless beatings, but rather wait until she's told or forced to take action. Her taking this job isn't to benefit the Union, it's to benefit herself, so she won't go out of her way to go above and beyond the bare minimum of what's needed; just reap the benefits and do what she must to get by.

Character Biography: Marc grew up in a middle-class family like any other, the kind that kept critter-hunting guns in the house and held game-nights in the basement when the sirens went off and the house started shaking. It lasted ten years, but it only took seven hours to end it. With two dead parents and a missing sister, Marc entered the Graduate program without a lick of sense and left it jaded and bitter. It was the program that taught him to steal, taught him to cheat, and taught him to get his before someone else got theirs. It was the program that taught him to handle pain, to trudge head-long against waves of suffering and laugh at the feeling of water in his lungs, fueled only by his anger with God and his spite for the world He created. Graduating with his limbs and his sanity was his big middle-finger to the cosmos, an affirmation of his existence and vitality, delivered most poignantly as a question: That the best you got, fucker?

Current Character(s): Sheila Foley, Sun Yi.

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: A good story requires conflict, and conflict requires an enemy. Marc is an enemy -- a slippery guy, motivated by self-interest and a desire for survival. In the context of a narrative, that kind of unit is most interesting to me, because they're versatile in their behavior. They aren't slaves to protocol, nor are they nice to the point of negating the CCA's whole purpose. Their choices can be swayed -- their minds changed -- given enough material incentive. More importantly, their motivations are clear, and they lead down interesting (read: sketchy) pathways.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: Yeah. I've played a unit on a handful of servers.

Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?

Marc spent most of his childhood fighting to keep his head above water. In his mind, you're either floating on someone's shoulders or being used as a buoy for someone better. To Marc, playing for the winning team is the only way not to drown.

    Character biography:
Sef's story begins in Slovenia, 1986 - her birthplace and indefinite home for as long as it was left to believe. She grew up into an old-fashioned family that was well attuned to their culture and family oriented traditions in her eastern European homeland. As a little girl, she slowly began to adopt the intelligence and skills she needed to prepare herself for her teenage years. There was not much room for an open-minded life path as she fixated her future on valuing her mother and father's success - thus leading a linear social and career path that hoped to compliment her parents'.

It wasn't long before what was seemingly a gradually growing success was quickly torn asunder by the catastrophic events beginning in 1998. Sef was barely old enough to begin attending middle school. Instead, amidst the chaos of the Xen outbreak on earth, her parents had been separated from her during a violent bloodbath within her hometown.

The next series of years were nothing but mindless suffering as she had been left an orphan living among strangers in the urban centers. The mind of what was once a mere child who loved her parents and wanted nothing more than to pursue a life that her family could endorse was evidently forced to develop into that of a woman that had a hardened sense of courage and willingness to fight for herself. For survival - However, with the inevitable war that had drafted the entire planet to surrender to the sovereign combine empire, Sef dismissed the idea of peace and hope. It had started with her severed family and ended with the reign of an alien race.

Sef chose to lead a sheep's life for the remainder of her years, unintentionally becoming an upstanding citizen - nonetheless, a nobody. It was not until she mustered up the willingness to finish what she started 24 years later. She had thought of nothing unrealistic considering her oppressed position as a citizen. It was definitely a different path, and nothing close to what she had planned. The rations and propaganda regulated her life and incited a substantial amount of indoctrination which had twisted Sef to look at her enemy as an ally; but Sef never disregarded the standard - or the idea she wanted to live up to and now chose to pursue a life in the authority.

    Current character(s): Elexis May.

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: I wanted to revisit the prior experiences I've had with CCA-RP as it is a vastly different game of cards compared to your average cit/res RP. I've always enjoyed the freedom in the character development TnB's CCA originally imposed despite the canon depicting the combine as emotionless pawns - it leaves the opportunity to let your creativity coordinate the events that occur as your character endures the hardships of a maturing unit. Not only that, but I hope to also serve as a tool for role-play for some people that congregate mindlessly on s1 and help them get enjoyment out of what they came to do on the server, be it cit or cp.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: Yes. My first ever application dates back to 2009 during the "MET" era. I've hopped around on the same CP character, on and off, since then. I started in UNION, moved up to javelin, then ghost, and a number of elite squads such as arbiter, judge, valor, etc. It's a lengthy timeline.

    4. Have you had any prior experience with Civil Protection at TnB or elsewhere? How would you summarize that experience? How could you improve yourself?

Everything that has built my knowledge and experience with CCA-RP had started within TnB and carried on for a number of years. I believe everyone's experience is unique and relates a lot to how extensive your creative nature relating to RP is. Every development "arc" my character had within sociostability, external affairs, medical, elite, then finally rogue, was unpredictable every time. I improvised and reacted accordingly to the situations I was thrown in - whether it be my first interrogation ever as a GHOST unit, or, my 17th interrogation after my character had been shot by a malignant earlier and had an irritable aura - the outcome was different each time and I conducted them realistically. Nonetheless, this time, I feel like I could improve myself by having a lot more consistency in my role-play and my character's emotions - as in, completely avoid bipolar mood-swings where I go from beating somebody senseless to abruptly talking about pedicures with a citizen-type-thing. I want to try and avoid squad hopping and make the effort to stick to one expertise.

    Character name: James Ryan
    CID?: 22827
    Describe your character's physical appearance:
A white male normal standing male dawning a regular old worn citizen jumpsuit shirt with a pair of blue jeans and the darkest of brown boots. He has a scar on his left cheek and signs of pain in his eyes.

Describe your character's history and background:

James was only 13 or 14 years old by the time the Combine have finally reached Earth. James lived in a small RV park with his over abusive Aunt and Uncle cause his parents died in a car crash about 10 years back. James was never found at home, probably cause he wanted to stay away as long as he can but when he'd get home he would get beaten every night by his Uncle's belt buckle. But as the alien intruders transitioned himself and his family, separating them entirely James began to take it as a blessing and a chance to start a new life ruled by the Combine.

James himself was sent straight to an Institution to learn more about transhumanism, which his interpretations of transhumanism led to curiosity, and curiosity led to punishments for those wrong interpretations-- he soon got the message after a few beatings. After his teachings were done, he finally ready, he graduated and was transferred to work in City 27 which after some odd years, James transferred to City 17 as a factory worker with hopes for serving better towards his superiors. James is different from what he once was, James is a Graduate with a mission to impress his superiors and the alien race that gave him a second chance.

The Institute didn't make a factory worker, the Institute made an officer to protect his fellow units on duty, and as well as his superiors who give him a place to call home.

James has managed to take shelter with his abusive Aunt and Uncle throughout his whole life and through the strange Portal Storms that have soon led to the Xen invasion. James was an uneducated boy with no future ahead of him, he was just a boy waiting to die from another one of his Uncle's belt buckles to his back creating more devastating scars. The alien invasion (Combine) destroyed the RV park he once lived in separating himself from his Aunt and Uncle, which James didn't seem to give a shit about and decided to take the approach of the invasion as a blessing for a new life and new interpretations to believe in.

    2. Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?

Throughout James training and education through transhumanism ideals, he feels everything needs the change and will force every citizen who already doesn't think similarly, nor hasn't already will face his bad side. James is a tough human male and will react to change and complete each and every task he is given to make a change.

    3. Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?

James is motivated by the Institution and his superiors from that Institution in what he shall pursue in the Union, and that is to serve and protect his given city and what the Union stands for. Shall his training pay off once enlisted into the CCA?

    4. Have you had any prior experience with Civil Protection at TnB or elsewhere? How would you summarize that experience? How could you improve yourself?

I actually have in the past, my unit was 65777 (I think) in the VICE squadron. I've given the whole "CP RP" a break, but I want to get back into the swing of things and be active more on S1.

SCENARIO QUESTIONS - All scenarios are optional, but answers provide insight into your character and your writing. Consider both perspectives when explaining how your character would act or respond and what you should consider as the writer regarding the scenario.

James would take the evidence or snap a photo (Assuming the CCA still uses "PDAs".... And assuming the "PDAs" have cameras), or even make a rough sketch of the evidence and question the citizen. James would interrogate the citizen, but would also keep calm and try to reason with the citizen. But afterward, he would step to his nearest superior and either hand/show the sketch or evidence itself to his field commander (superior) and let them make the ultimate decision with no questions asked back.

    5. Your character has formed a partnership with another unit, and the two of them often get assigned together for various details. Your character has caught their partner numerous times in questionable circumstances, so finally, they confide in your unit saying that they've started talks with dissidents against the Combine. They claim the dissidents are non-violent, and only desire supplies to help get citizens outside the city walls, asking for your help in simply turning a blind eye.

James would "agree" with the unit, but later on, would approach his Field Commander (Superior) and inform that there's a rogue unit helping malignant activity, giving the rogue units digits and reasons of being rogue. James only serves one side, and that's the Union.

Character biography: Nikolai Avilov was born in Moscow 1972. Nikolai lived a hateful life. He underwent ruthless abuse from his glutton of a father. His mother died when he was young. Throughout his life, he always tried to take his lumps like a man
. Throughout school, he would be taunted for his intelligence. Mocked for his introversion. He hated everyone. He eventually graduated with a fairly decent GPA and went on throughout his life a sour man. in 1998, Nikolai had heard news of Scientists in New Mexico causing a Resonance Cascade. Though, He focused mainly on the part of it causing total destruction to the facility. Nikolai laughed to himself. Nikolai saw them as peasants. However, in 2004, Nikolai's life changed forever. He had heard of massive Portal storms in the west. Releasing alien creatures unknown to mankind. Not long after, His country was riddled with the dreaded wormholes. Nikolai went on the run, killing anything in his way, Human, or not. His hatred was more potent than it could have been. He was constantly attacked by bandits and aliens. Two years later. Nikolai was woken from his hiding spot by Russian soldiers. He didn't remember much. Only struggling. He had been thrown into a camp. For 4 years. He had lived there in minimalist conditions. Constant abuse from the guards. Along with consistent malevolence from his campmates. in 2010, Nikolai, age 38, went through another life changing event. The 7-hour war. He remembered the terrifying creatures he witnessed. Tall, three-legged monsters. Flying beasts with particle cannons. And pain. Dear God, The pain. He had lived through the combine dictatorship for 12 years. Suffering constant pain. the only avail to his suffering, was when he saw that CCA applications had opened. Finally. He could take this opportunity to inflict his pain unto others.
Current character(s): Nikolai Avilov, Tyron Wilson, Jackson Green

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: OOC: Ive never actually taken part in the Combine POV, and I thought it would be good to switch the roles so that I can fully integrate into TnB.

IC: Nikolai wishes to inflict the pain he endured through his life unto others.
Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: Nada my friend

PICK ONE QUESTION TO ANSWER: Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision? He wishes for power, and to inflict pain and suffering unto those who disobey him. (Very Megalomaniacal and hateful)

    Character biography:

My decision to enlist was not one made out of any adherence to my moral code. I think it was the worst decision of my life, or at least somewhere near it.

The idea was born from a conversation, the kind you find yourself in when it's late, rainy, and you think nobody can hear you in the dark corner of the bar. Everything sounded easy: a man on the inside who could help, someone to ease the suffering and stem the bleeding. I didn't do it out of a sense of duty to my people, but the nagging guilt that ate at me; was I any better than anyone else who enlisted - people I saw as thugs, cheats, liars, thieves - if I stayed on the sideline and did nothing at all?
Now that I'm here, I find that I can do nothing; I see the futility of our struggle - I see the mountain we as a species are supposed to circumvent, yet I have no clear way around or over it. It is simply an impasse. I stagnate here in the great lie.

There is no single act of defiance that could bring us back from the brink. We are all feeding the machine. There is no hope, there is no collective victory.

    We are doomed.

Current character(s): Daniel T. Varges, Armo, and Ashley Graystonne

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?:
It's probably one of my favourite roles you can play, given that you can instigate a lot among otherwise inactive players. I don't primarily want to serve as an antagonist, but just providing any sense of conflict on a moral, physical, or logistical level for other players is a fun experience for me.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?:
A lot, between many, many servers over the years.

What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?
Gabriel enlisted because not-enlisting didn't feel like an option when it came down to it. If he didn't help, who would? He didn't feel brave enough to resist openly and he didn't feel like he could make a change to the circumstances around him without access to resources. He personally believes it was a decision made out of ignorance, at least now.
He feels that since his birth he has been part of the downtrodden, growing up in a South African slum and spending his time just trying to get by without stepping on toes or pissing off the wrong people - now he's been giving a lick of authority, things could many different ways.

    Character Name:

    Samira Rostami

    CID:
    40034

    SteamID:
    STEAM_0:1:60276577

    Timezone:
    EST -- UTC−05:00

    Character biography:

Samira was born into a relatively poor Iranian family on April 10th, 2000; she came to be in the small city of Chabahar, a coastal city of about a hundred thousand. Due to her young age at the time of all that was occurring upon Earth, she never retained the significant change that human civilization underwent through the Seven Hour War, the subjugation, the installation of the suppression field, and the total occupation by the Combine Empire. She was merely a bouncing little girl that had not a care in the world.

This, of course, changed when she became of age to be inducted into one of the many institutions that the Combine had set up under the guise of being a peaceful and safe place – away from the strife the adults underwent. Here, she was selected for a dorm room with plenty of other girls, and practically ripped away from the outside world. Here, she began to learn English, grammar, literature, mathematics, along with the more “focused" articles of education. These, of course, being loyalty, support of transhumanism, and the absolute adoration of her Combine overlords. It was here that the girl would slowly begin to grow up, it was here where she'd make her first friendships, and where she'd start to learn what her early life was going to be like.

Continuing to grow inside the institution she had been placed in, Samira had become proficient with English by the time she had turned ten, as was required by her pro-transhuman teachers and administrators. Excelling with her studies, she began to rise above the other girls she had been paired with, which didn't sit too well with them. This is when Samira began to realize that people only cared about themselves, with other girls began to sabotage her work, leading to a sudden drop in her scoring. Though, initially, the instructors only warned against this type of behavior, as Samira continued to fail their expectations, she began to experience beatings. This left her battered, bruised, and very angry for a good many months. With that, she started to use her intellectual skills to do the same right back to the others, sabotaging them so she could retake the top. Of course, she understood the risk behind this, considering she too could be punished for her cutthroat activities, but she paid little mind to this. Eventually, she came out on top again, due to her rapid improvement, she and the others graduated on time, though she was only recommended for the general workforce, due to the lapse she'd experienced with her grading.

Finally being released back into the world after turning eighteen, the young woman was sent to the capital of her home country, that being City 63; a far larger, more developed, and controlled city then her hometown had been. From there, she began going about her daily, boring lifestyle, having nearly a year pass before she was eventually approached by a man who identified himself as a member of quiet dissent among the populace. Her initial reaction to this was disgust, of course, but she did hear him out, and from that, eventually was converted to an Islamic form of mysticism, known as Sufism. This, of course, was kept quiet, and she only rarely met up with the few other members of the sect that had developed there, but it did serve as her initial form of free-thinking. Of course, she still adored the Combine, and the ideal of transhumanism, but she also applied herself to perfection through the unallowed religion. Carrying her practice out for two more years in secret, she eventually was moved from City 63 to City 17, where she was given her current lodging and work -- again being manual labor.

This, initially, was fine with Samira. She could go about her life quietly, and not be bothered. Though, she found that City 17 was far different than her stay with 63. The people weren’t nearly as calm or peaceable, there was far more civil unrest, and she found things just to be generally different. So, she took on a guise of stupidity, seeking to be regarded as a nobody, so she could begin to learn more that someone normal wouldn’t know. From this, she was mistreated by her fellow citizen, insulted and ridiculed, and made fun of, as everyone she came into contact with assumed her to be just as she appeared. However, she took this to heart, and it began to crack her ideals of harmony that her religion had taught her. This was only added to by the Civil Protection units she came into contact with, most rewarded her, and she received far less ridicule than she had at the mercy of her fellow citizen. This only awakened her old teachings more, it only brought back the old fire that she had felt against her friends from the academy after they sabotaged her. If they were going to mistreat her when she acted dumb and innocent, it would only be worse later on. Though, she understood the benefit of playing dumb, having been privy to multiple crimes, activities brought about by the units, and multiple other occurrences that she’d used her stupidity as a means of gaining more information. And so, she decided she was going to get back at her fellow citizens, she was going to make them pay for mistreating her, even if she had brought it on herself.

    Current character(s):
As of now, I have no other characters. I've dedicated my full time to this one.

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: This can be IC or OOC.
The CCA has always interested me in seeing how it can actually be done, it seems like it would be a very interesting boon to my current character. Of course, the development could both be negative and positive, but it would provide for more ways to continue the story for her.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?:
Unfortunately, I do not. This would be my first position within the Combine.

Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?
As was said in her biography, Samira is motivated to join the CCA due to her mistreatment at the hands of her fellow citizens. While she attempted to be nothing but kind to others, and often times going far out of her way to help someone in the essence of keeping her guise up, she was insulted anyways. With that, she desires something more, people she can rely on to accept her for her true self. Not to mention, it would certainly help with how much she knows about other people.

Last weeks batch has been processed. Don't be deterred if you feel like you've put in a lot of work and all you see is accepted for interview, the ones that were outright accepted are all people that I've witnessed and I'm already confident in their ability. I don't know or haven't seen the rest of you before, so you'll be going through the extra interview process on the server.

Applications won't be closing, but instead will be kept open on a rolling cycle basis. For now, we'll review them each week.

For those of you that were accepted, you can either get on the server and request recruit flags, or you can request an interview to introduce your character.

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: This can be IC or OOC.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?:

    PICK ONE QUESTION TO ANSWER:

    1. As a citizen, your character has managed to endure twelve years of the Combine occupation, as well as the devastating effects of the Portal Storms and Xen invasion prior to the 7 Hour War. Who was your character before the Combine? What experiences do they bring from their past life? How has the occupation affected them?

    2. Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?

    3. Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?

    4. Have you had any prior experience with Civil Protection at TnB or elsewhere? How would you summarize that experience? How could you improve yourself?

    Character biography:
Sharmarke was one of the lucky slum boys to both survive the Portal Storms and the Seven Hour War. At the age of 8, he was pulled from the dangers of his home and dropped in what his perception of the lap of luxury was. Through the next twelve years, he was molded by posthumanist idealism and the rigid discipline of Combine institutions. Having been given every right to give humanity's past the finger, and living in an environment that bolstered his desire to be accepted within a group, he excelled as a student in the institution to the extent of serving some time as a prefect and dealing with disciplinary action against less compliant pupils.

Twelve years of rigid instruction and participation in preparatory programs that were designed to break down identity essentially erased his old personhood as a Somali boy and built him up as a willing participant in the ascension of mankind. He viewed everything from the perception of his skin tone to his name as slights against humanity's future that were rooted in the sins of the old world.

Ultimately I want to create a character who isn't molded by the pre-Combine world, since my typical character types are older adults who were already professionals or in higher education during the Portal Storms, I want to try somebody new whose identity is more or less a non-identity that is stripped of attachment to what people use to form their sense of self.

    Current character(s):
Alma Chaves, Michel Leveque, scores of disposable event characters

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: Sharmarke's reasons are pretty clear. He has no other path in mind than serving the UU.

OOC, I want to try something completely different from my normal sort of world-weary alcoholic with a nihilistic ontology and a chip on their shoulder. I've gained a lot of interest in playing a young character after interacting with a few on my rebel and figured that I might as well try it myself. I want to see how the sudden introduction to the violence and pain of the Combine occupation in the real world will affect a fanatic to its ideals. I have no real direction to send the character and feel like, even though I probably won't take him super high in the ranks before he's killed or otherwise finishes his story, it's something that's good to explore on a thematic level and is a break from the normal sort of witty, jaded 40something characters that I just love so much.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: I've been forced into field command, made miserable by it, and quit a grand total of 5 different times.

On a serious note, it's really where I learned most of my stuff. I know I'm seen as a rebel admin now but a great majority of my time here was spent playing a Combine character. Yeah, she was borderline rogue basically the entire time, but I've been around the block a few times at the very least.

Despite being a staunch posthumanist, Sharmarke actually has an aversion to violence. In theory, he considers it a necessary means to an end, but he is actually going to be uneasy with participating in it. Whether he eventually accepts it as a part of life or is driven mad from it is going to be an interesting part of his story. He's polite, mild-mannered, and obedient, obviously stemming from his upbringing and adolescence. I'm eager to play somebody completely blind to the reality of the world and showing how their eyes are opened based on the things that happen around them. I really have never played a blank-slate sort of character before, so hopefully this puts other characters in a position to mold him and reap the rewards or guilt of their actions. I honestly don't think he'll last long as far as player characters go, but maybe I'll fall in love with the experiment.

    CID: #78424
    SteamID: STEAM_0:0:35348807

Character biography: Yes, it looked clear from here. There was no way it was going to backfire, the odds were in his favours! He could feel his skin crawl at the sensation of utter victory, the ice in his belly melting away at the ecstasy of what laid in front of him, like a fine meal at the most prestigious restaurant possible!

Then the showdown came and his full-house lost to a flush, like he just received the bill for that fine meal and his pockets weren't deep enough to fit such a thing.

Soon, Roger was out on his ass from that shady establishment, looking down at the ground as usual, and his pockets empty of credits... as usual. This was a pretty typical day for the likes of him, however.

Yep, you couldn't fool anybody if they told you Roger was a hard-working citizen who didn't succumb to such things like gambling, and judging by his history, it was always a natural thing for him to come to, even before the 7-hour war and all this combine occupation bullshit that just got in the way of his unfeasible life.

He was born in the U.S.A, when it was called such a thing, and from there on then he simply lived. At the age of Seven, he can recall he had a fight with a classmate over a simple game of Monopoly, claiming that his friends rule about getting money on Free parking was a bunch of baloney, at the age of Sixteen he gained his first sign of independence - a Drivers licence and his very own car, he remembered it quite well, a 1998 Mercedez-Ben C180, which he cared for quite well - until he lost that in a gamble. To this day, he'll tell you the odds were in his favor. ("I had a straight flush, how the hell could that dirtbag get a hand with a ROYAL FLUSH IN IT?") And even in the wake of the military moving into the city, with something terrible on the horizon, he was still worrying about himself, his family had completely disowned him in favour of his better brother (Who would end up dying in the seven hour war, trying to save a child.). Even when the seven hour war came, he was trying to scrounge people out of rationed food and water in some petty gamble of dice.

Now he's in god-knows-where. City seventeen, City fourty-five, he's been moved around like a suitcase in an avalanche of cargo.

"<:: Where do you think you're going, Roger? ::>" Oh perfect, here comes the REAL trouble you had to watch out for now a days. This unit was always on his back, he knew of Rogers tendency to gamble better than he did, he couldn't even recall this jerks numbers. A pat down, a muttered curse, and a bruised cheek always came out, this stupid irresistible flow. This day was just too shitty, even for the likes of someone like Roger. It was always like that, wasn't it? A heavy gamble, where he had such a good hand, only to be trumped by an even better one. It was fucking stupid, and it was just too...

    ...Unfair?

An idea crawled at the back of his head, he had a thought. An idea. Even if it was stupid, ideas like the one he was thinking of didn't come around often. Maybe... There was something better waiting for him in the CCA? Yeah, why the hell didn't he think about it before, he had twelve god damn years to figure it out! Those units always stride around with a privileged step, sneering, the imprint of a boot left around the underclass, where ever they went. It was no different than before the war, that was it! But only this time, he had a CHANCE to get to this place where gamblers dream of, he's seen citizens turned into those strong figures, and hell, if a schmuck that was worse off than he was had a chance, then he did too! If there's union stuff, he knows the drill. He's been around for a long time, twelve years to be exact, he can call a bluff too easily, he'll just butter them up with what they wanna hear and he'll get in, quick and easy! It was probably one of the best ideas Roger had, it couldn't backfire!...

    ...Could it?

Current character(s): Winston Donner, Calum Drummond, Michael Heinberg

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: Mainly because I felt like I've been over glaring the potential of what being in the CCA can hold. I've seen the quote threads and screenshots, the tales my friends in the CCA have told me, I reckon there's alot of room for some seriously immersive roleplay.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: Only abit. I was a unit on Earthfall briefly, but I did play a minster on that for ALOT of time, but pretty much got my head wrapped around the likes of what you could accomplish. Not only that, but I've been around people who RP as CCA enough to know what you need to do. I can put in my own little tinge as this character aswell.

    2. Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?

He's a coward, in alot of senses, where if there's a gun against gun situation against a random citizen, chances are he's going to flee unless there's something that can tip the scales in his favor. He's pretty naive to what he'll experience in the CCA aswell, the transhuman business going right over his head - or rather, what it truly might imply, and he's ambitious, not to a flaw however. He knows his limits, and he'll try to advance in a situation where opportunity presents itself... not in the face of certain death, however. He'd really need something to pressure him to go that far... and it's because of this that I think I'll most likely be hated by my peers, where only a real stern punishment might deter me from doing something selfish or vain. He might not last long, but in the case of where he'll be grounded for death or the likes, he'll make it one hell of a spectacular sight.

    Character Name: Nguy Lan

    CID: 75550

    SteamID: STEAM_0:1:20089414

    Timezone: EST -5

Character biography: By some terrible grace of God, or perhaps even karma, Nguy was birthed into the times of trouble within Vietnam. The Vietnam War was coming to an end as Nguy came about his childhood in the late 70's; he was one of the few lucky Vietnamese citizens to be born into Hanoi. This sterling northern capital was primarily untouched by the wartime effort despite ongoing conflict around it, only briefly suffering from its affect in some intermittent capacity. Despite combat not reaching Hanoi's main population the effects of war were still readily felt across the population -- starvation, suffering and sickness was plentiful even in that gilded crown of the third world.

While Nguy's family was by no means wealthy, their monies far surpassed even the highest of the lower class within Vietnam and allowed him to attend higher learning. His pacifist-inclined Buddhist beliefs were firmly cemented as he grew up in a recovering wartime economy and as he went along into the early 90's he found himself gravitating towards medicine, a means to ease the recovering country and assist in its modern welfare. His idle, greasy hands once used to collect stray brass along the streets were transformed as he underwent ambulatory medicine training at the Bach Mai Hospital. Over time Nguy Lan became the country's equivalent of a paramedic, his days spent aboard an ambulance.

Many, many years later the Seven Hours War came along and Nguy was powerless to watch his country stumble, still weakened and impoverished after years of bloodshed. Well in to his adult years by now, Nguy was held in the hospital involuntarily serving the Combine as a makeshift nurse for the growing numbers of injured refugees and prisoners. Over time as the assimilation began and those of substantial skill or training were converted, Nguy Lan was inducted to the nearest Civil Protection roster due to his reluctant service and skill in the beginning as a healthcare provider.

    Current character(s): Kip.

Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: This can be IC or OOC. I entertained the idea of a lax Buddhist character a long time ago and it's always been a religion that I've been interested in looking in to. After reading in to it a bit more recently I've made the correlation between CCA and the religion -- it has the potential to stress the capabilities of my writing skill and I like the idea of a conflict of interest ICly. While Nguy is a bit more relaxed in the overall sense of Buddhism and the Eightfold Path, he's a passionate follower that is vehemently against the entire concept of the Combine. It does however promise a good deal of the Eightfold Path's attributes, namely the right livelihood of few possessions, mindfulness of his action and right speech/effort. Buddhism is big on the idea of knowing what you're doing, making sure it's the right thing to do to benefit mankind, and then doing it. Ignorance of action is strictly abhorred, and I think it'll be neat to play out the idea that Nguy has to balance the Path while maintaining his job description with pipe dreams of easing mankind's suffering.

Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?:
I was around a couple years back in HL2 but only played as citizens or resistance members. Otherwise innumerable small HL2 servers.

Describe your character's personality and what makes them human. How will they affect characters around them? How will they react to the situations they are put into?
I plan to portray Nguy Lan as a more reserved voice liable more so to do what's asked of him then brood later than cause a scene. His time in Vietnam as an ambulatory healthcare provider has obviously honed him in to a more observant and stable-minded guy capable of keeping his wits about him; either way, he's mature and old enough to hold his wits. Obviously he's liable to near-immediately have doubts about the CCA but the narrative of a character's passions struggling against eachother seems appealing. I'm of the mind that this particular story will involve Nguy's journey in to his own mind and depending on circumstances falling deeper into the rabbit hole and abandoning his tradition in light of a more advanced civilization or alternatively offing himself for his crimes against humanity.

Either way, I've been studying for a Crit Care/Paramedic degree at a nearby university and I'm keen on humblebragging my knowledge in a roleplay setting.

    Character name: Jiro Tengan

Current character(s): Vladimir Von Rushmore (Don't Use), Vladimir Von Robertson (Don't Use), James Naseth (James 'Target Practice') Naseth, Jiro Tengan, Robert Longwall (Don't Use), Vince Winchester, Brian O'Neil, Zhengzhong Zhang, Harry Fishwing, Artyom Herbert, Berry Johnson
Character Biography: Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1985 Jiro had an easy going childhood, a lot of friends, middle class, and just the right school. Jiro thought to himself almost every day of how cool it would defend Tokyo from criminals and he told himself that he could do it one day. He kept fit all the time and read all the law enforcement books and watched shows such as CHiPS, Car 54, Sledgehammer, and Gorilla The Police 8th Investigation Unit. Even though some of these were mostly watched in his adulthood he still watched them. Most of these shows were American so he did not understand them well but soon caught on after taking an English class in his high school years. Jiro always wanted to become a law enforcer but could never gain the courage to apply for the job openings at the Tokyo police department whenever they arose.
When the seven-hour war hit his dreams were crushed to ever become a law enforcer that he always dreamed of becoming even though he was always scared to apply for the job. He worked for an office company, garage, and pawn shop in his years before the war. He got a degree in engineering in college but never got a job as one due to the seven-hour war and wanting to now pursue the dream of law enforcement under the combines rule to get a second chance to help the city in its current state. Seeing the citizens doing illegal things almost at every turn he knew that he had to gain the courage to apply for the CCA to clean up the streets of the citizen scum that were doing this behind the great benefactors.
Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: OOC: I have played almost every faction in the TnB. Rebel, Loyalist, Regular citizen and so on. Wanting to have a CCA officer as one will make that complete. Being a rebel or plain old citizen, in general, gets pretty boring and you just need something to do. Plus from what I hear a lot it helps develop a character more than it already has due to what happens as an officer.
IC: Jiro wants to serve the city and the Union as best as he can pretty much. He being a hard on loyalist but never going to the schools wants to make the city safer for both him and the citizens that live in it. Plus he always wanted to become an officer of the law when he was younger but now he has decided to do it for a better cause.
Do you have any prior experience with Combine role-play?: Not really aside from two older servers that have been shut down due to no one paying VIP and such but I was normally just a basic officer. Only one server I was a high ranking Elite.
    ESSAY QUESTIONS
    4. Being a CCA officer or "cp" on a server is pretty enjoyable. You get to talk to many people while doing rounds in the street walking about patrolling the city looking for anything out of the ordinary. It's really fun to meet some of the people you both RP with such as citizens and your fellow officers. While there are normally slow days there are sometimes events where rebels raid the nexus with C4 or attack a convoy of CCA/CP/COTA Supplies or a prisoner. Doing these adds more to the character's story and so it is really fun and nice to have that breath of fresh air when your part of the CCA since you get a bit more freedom. As for how I could improve myself I guess mostly trying to be out of the nexus more often and taking in the surroundings such as prop placement, and fellow players. Both talking to them casually and in situations that they fell into.

    Character Name: Jonathan Weber
    CID: 10197
    SteamID: STEAM_0:1:51817559
    Timezone: EST
Character biography: Jonathan spent his bleak childhood in Seattle, left with an orphanage at his birth that will be his home until the Resonance Cascade and the beginning of the portal storms. After which he was homeless until the Union invaded, where he was then displaced to Paris for a brief three months and then bounced around Rome, Berlin, and Moscow for the next several years. Odessa is where he was finally anchored until now, and where he could finally find an identity for himself. Years pass, and Jonathan finds himself transferred from district to district, still bouncing around like a ping pong. Identity is a pipe dream for Jon as he finds himself sitting at a bus station, waiting for the next paddle smack to send him across the board, to another grimy flat with another huddled mass of blank faces he won't spend a month with. The bus never comes and Jonathan finds himself finally anchored, a mistake? Maybe a small error in the system, a hiccup. But he wasn't prepared for this, he wasn't sure he'd ever find a place for himself. Now it seems that pipe dream has come to a reality. This is where the next chapter begins, and Jonathan makes the decision to sail above humanity's eventual demise and into the ranks of the Authority. At least that's what Breen promises. His decision was spontaneous and uncertain, made out of fear of becoming what he was in Seattle, just another street urchin. Except that will truly be his demise in this hell hole. Fear drives him forward.

I feel as if this is a bit vague and repetitive, but I'm not sure what else I could fill it with without ruining it.
Current character(s): Winston Thomas. Lazlo Boyd.
Why do you want to serve in the CCA?: ICly: Jon doesn't have anywhere else to go and he's basically doing it for the perks that come with it, more or less ignorant to the darker aspects of the Authority. OOCly: I think it's high time I see the other side of the fence, and I finally got the courage to apply.
Do you have any prior experience with Combine roleplay?: Not from behind the mask, no.

Essay: 3. Civil Protection is a position that brings with it both advantages and disadvantages, and they are typically not well received by the citizens they oversee. What motivated or motivates your character to enlist? What experiences have led to this decision?

Jonathan's greatest fear is being put back onto the street like was his life before, because this is a very alien environment to him, it's not like Seattle and it's definitely not America. That's what motivated him to enlist himself to the Authority. He doesn't think much of what others will think of him, that's never been a major concern to him because his life was always spent at the bottom, never really absorbing his setting because he never had much of a solid foundation to stick to. The only grounded chapter of his life was the Orphanage, which to him was heaven compared to the streets he was forced on when the place was shut down during the storms. This, to him, seemed like his only choice because he always thought the cycle wouldn't ever be broken. His safety was in that movement that he hated ever so, always a new setting, a new home. It was like a guarantee to him. Now, that's gone and his reactionary attitude pushed him toward the force.
